General Conference! :D

Did anybody attend the Relief Society General Broadcast last night? Did anybody fall absolutely in love with the new RS General Presidency? (SO nice to not have talk after talk about being a good Visiting Teacher and the purpose of Relief Society.)

Did anyone else shed buckets of tears?? The focus on the Atonement last night was just what I needed!

General Conference! :D

Did anybody attend the Relief Society General Broadcast last night? Did anybody fall absolutely in love with the new RS General Presidency?

I'd forgotten all about the new presidency:blushing: But I was overcome with love for them as they spoke of the doctrine of the Atonement. Not just one of them, but each of them touched my heart with their messages.

Can't wait for next week!

I went to our stake activity and the new presidency is so awesome. I liked the old one too :) The emphasis on the atonement was so amazing. It was nice to hear them talk about adjusting to their new responsibilities since I just got called as a counselor in our ward RS. I worry about being able to do a good job. I'm so excited for General Conference.

Oh goodness, how did I miss the RS general meeting? I forgot about it completely! We had email reminders too...maybe I'll turn it on now since my baby doesn't seem to want to go to bed.

I'm excited for General Conference. Hoping the kids will cooperate so I can enjoy the sessions.

It's every six months! Yay! :D

Yup! The first weekend of April and the first weekend of October are General Conference weekends. The Saturday before the October one is when they have a general (church-wide) meeting specifically for the Relief Society (women 18+), and the Saturday prior to the April session they have a general meeting for the Young Women (12-17, plus their moms/leaders/etc.). There's also a general Priesthood meeting (for young men and adults from ages 12+) on the Saturday of General Conference, following the two regular church-wide meetings.

Looooooove Conference time! :D

I have it DVRed but haven't watched it. Our stake put on a big to-do around it yesterday, but I was too wiped out after taking my DD shoe shopping :)

My stake did too. We had a "light dinner" (soup and salad) at 3pm, followed by a program where each ward had a group who presented a woman from the scriptures (my ward did Emma Smith). Basically there was a person dressed up as that person, someone to read a scripture related to that woman, and then a musical number. It was *amazing*, and I'm not usually the sappy, cry-at-anything Mormon woman. :tongue_smilie: The women selected were: Emma Smith, Abish, Eve, Ester, Ruth, and Sarah. Then we had a bunch of super yummy deserts before going into the Chapel to watch the broadcast (5pm our time). An amazing evening! I look forward to it every year. :)

I just finished listening to Linda K. Burton's message about the atonement. I appreciate her emphasis on what is at the very core of our religion:

"All that is unfair about life can be made right through the atonement of Jesus Christ."

"There is power in the atonement to enable us to overcome the natural man or woman and become true disciples of Jesus."

"When each of us has the doctrine of the atonement written deep in our hearts, then we will begin to become the kind of people the Lord wants us to be."

"The atonement is the greatest evidence we have of the Father's love for His children."

And they chose two of my very, very favorite children's songs for the intermediate number by the choir! "I'm trying to be like Jesus" and "How Could the Father Tell the World".

Should I listen to the rest now or actually get schoolwork going this morning?

:)Sarah:)

Yes, yes, and yes! It was wonderful. I found myself wanting to bear my testimony throughout the entire broadcast, "I know that is true!", but I held my tongue (because that would be weird) and saved it for Sunday.

I like our new president. I could tell she was nervous because she talked so fast. I remember the last president doing that during her first talk :) She gave an excellent talk that I wish I could have absorbed more. I'll have to go back and read it. And the second counselor (I think) had beautiful hair. :tongue_smilie:

I can't wait until General Conference! I'm such a nerd.

I'm still working my way through the Relief Society conference. Some quotes that stuck out to me today:

Carole M. Stephens

"Each of us has had and will continue to have adversity in our lives. This mortal life is a time of testing and we will continue to have opportunities to use our agency to choose what we will learn from the adversity that will surely come."

"It isn't enough to just be on the journey. We must be awake to our duty and continue with faith as we draw upon the comforting, strengthening, enabling, and healing power of the atonement."

"We are covenant keeping daughters in his kingdom, and endowed with power through our covenants we are prepared to do our duty."

"Let us begin with ourselves. Let us begin where we are. Let us begin today."

"Awaken to who we are. Awaken to our Duty. We are daughters of our Heavenly Father who loves us."

Linda S. Reeves

"Sisters, our Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ know us and love us...they feel the depth of our suffering and we can feel of their love and compassion in our suffering."

I haven't had time yet to finish Sister Reeve's talk or listen to President Eyring. Hopefully this evening I can get through them.

Ds21 came home from his mission late Friday night, so we spent the night with him instead :D. I'll have to watch it later this week.

:grouphug:I'm so happy for you all! Our son has been gone for 6 months this month. I haven't watched it yet either and I usually do watch it live.

As the first counselor in Primary I am SOOOO excited to stay in bed all weekend in my jammies and watch conference. It is like a vacation!!!!!! I am so so so tired from hs and church right now. Time to fill up my spiritual cup.

Switch Primary 1st Counselor to nursery leader and this is me. I'm excited.

Primary Chorister here, and I'm SO with you! They're supposed to release me after our program in a few weeks and it can't come soon enough. Being on my feet for most of that last two hours at this stage of pregnancy is really getting difficult!

So, what are y'alls plans for Conference munchies? :D We used to eat the about-to-expire food from our 72 hour kits, but we ended up breaking into them early this year.

What do you ladies buy/make? (and please present some healthy options too! ;) )

I love serving in the Primary, but those callings can take so much out of you. I've been chorister twice and nursery leader twice, and I think both of those are some of the most exhausting callings in the church. I was released from nursery a couple of months ago before my baby was born, and called as ward librarian--so far I'm loving being in the library: I get to talk to lots of people as they come by, and I get some quiet time in the middle of the block when everyone is in class and I can actually read and ponder the scriptures without interruption.

I've had my hands full for a while and haven't been able to get in here much. Today the kids are having a sick day (thanks to the stomach bug I soldiered on with last week) and I'm taking the time to catch up on a few things. What a fun thread to find waiting for me!

I asked my family members to write down what they wanted for conference munchies on the fridge shopping list. So far the only things on there are wafer cookies (those pink rectangular things with the texture of styrofoam--for some reason they always want them at conference, and no other time of the year..lol), White Castle cheeseburgers (dh), and homemade crab rangoon. I'm thinking that list needs a little filling out.

We don't have satelite or cable, but I found a BYUtv app for the IPad. Is that the same thing and will the conference be showed on that?

It should be, as BYU TV will definitely broadcast it. I didn't realize they had an app! Off to investigate, thanks! (Of course, anything using my apps will still use my overwhelmed DSL, but in general...)

Well, I'm just going to be old-fashioned and watch it on KSL TV. LOL. We love to sit together in our family room and watch. Plus, we have an open floor plan, so I can be in the kitchen making munchies and our big Conference Sunday dinner and still see it all.

It's my favorite weekend of the year! :D

Dh keeps talking about getting a digital antenna so we can do that. Maybe by the next Conference!

Can I ask another question?

How do your kids get involved in the conference? Do you watch it all together and at what age did you start involving them or making them sit and watch? When they are toddlers etc, do they just play around you while you watch??

sugardoodle.net has some fun "Conference Packets" that have activities for little kids to do. Some families do "Conference Bingo" where the kids have to listen for oft-repeated words (like "repentence", "atonement", "love", "scriptures" etc.) in the talks. Or some take that game a step up and whenever you hear one of those words you get to take a piece of candy (like a gummy worm or an M&M) from a candy jar that has that word on it.

In our family we do Bingo, and we don't expect the kids to listen for the whole 2 hours. We only do "required listening" when the Prophet is speaking, otherwise they're allowed to play bingo or play *quietly* with their toys, but still in the same room.

When our kids were little they just played around us while we watched. We have special treats during conference and they're served in the room with the TV and must be eaten there as well. Now that we're all older it's partly just habit for them to watch, but we still let them bring in toys to play with, or in dd's case art supplies so she can sit and draw while she listens. And we almost always set up a jigsaw puzzle so dh and I have something to occupy our hands. I'll sometimes work on a quilt project while I watch. I don't know how much sinks in for the kids, but I figure I've at least provided the opportunity for them to hear and tried to make it pleasant, and whether or not they listen is up to them. They do seem to look forward to sleeping in, watching church on TV in their jammies, and munching on fun food.

We got a Roku this year, so we'll be watching it via the internet on our tv, because Roku has a BYUtv channel.

My girls LOVE conference. It is probably because my 4yo is weird and gets incredibly excited about the Tabernacle Choir. Every Sunday she begs to watch Music and the Spoken Word (our church isn't until 1:00). In April, she sat and watched probably 6 out of the 8 hours and she is excited for conference this year too. My 2yo will probably be in and out. We only require that they listen to the prophet at their ages, but they usually watch more. One of their favorite things to do is dance like crazy whenever the MoTab sings. Even if it is a really reverent song, they are still dancing like animals. It cracks me up.

We will be having home made cinnamon rolls. Mmmm. Also my husband told me he might smoke some pork ribs.

I used to like to work on a handicraft (like cross-stiching) while listening, but since I've had kids, that's pretty much impossible.

Conference is such a fun time!

The LDS.org website has Conference printables like word bingo and color by word when the speakers say something. As long as they stay quiet, I'm happy.
