KungFuPanda
Hello Ladies, I took my teen in to the ped this morning. What started as a stomach bug morphed into a raging sinus/ear infection. This morning, she was prescribed a stronger inhaler (we're brand new to asthma) an antibiotic, and ear drops. The trouble is she has this horrid cough and can only use the inhaler every other hour. Can I give her a cough suppressant on top of all of this? She sounds just awful and she's stripping her throat. Poor kid, she was on the bronchitis-to-pneumonia train when we took her in and she's been sick less than a week. I think she had one ear infection when she was two, so we're not terribly skilled at this game.
amo_mea_filiis.
Every other sounds like a lot. What med? What dose? Does she also take an inhaled steroid? It could be that she needs an oral steroid boost to get over this.
amo_mea_filiis.
And is she using a spacer? Many people (even ling term asthma adults) end up "eating" the meds from an inhaler. A spacer with inhaler or switching to neb for a while could help, too.
KungFuPanda
Her inhaler is albuteral.
renmew
I don't think she should be using Albuteral more than once every two hours. Mine gives me the shakes often. I agree with pp who said to get the spacer. Also, if she is so bad off right now that the inhaler isn't cutting, she might need time on a nebulizer. When my asthma gets to a certain point I have to use my machine first for a bit before the inhaler will make much of a difference. Also, for the burning cough, have you tried time in a steamy bathroom. My mom used to set my up in the bathroom with a scalding hot shower on and a towel over my head. But, it worked. amo_mea_filiis.
I would not give albuterol every other hour. My ds used to see a very aggressive pulmonologist and our max was 3 treatments back to back. If that did not cut the cough, he was to go to the ER so they could monitor him while giving more meds. We could also do every 3 hours for a day, max. Keep in mind, mine takes a daily inhaled steroid. How does she look? No retractions (skin pulling in around ribs or throat)? Can she exhale quickly without coughing? She may need a Dr to give a few treatments, an oral steroid, and inhaled steroid.
