Does this sound like a good plan (continuing phonics...)

My K and 2nd grader will be finished with their PAL (IEW) Reading curriculum by Christmas and I'm thinking of what to continue ... does this sound like a good plan?

AAS Level 2 & 3

Memoria Press Storytime Treasure

ETC 4-5

Wondering if it would be a good idea or overkill to continue/add in CLE LA.:confused:

With All About Spelling they would be continuing with their phonics and spelling, with the MP Storytime they would have vocabulary and reading and the ETC would be for extra practice (they are currently working slowly through the ETC books they are on books 3.5 and 4.

What do you guys use after you finish a phonics curriculum? They are currently able to read Level 1 and Level 2 readers, One Fish Two Fish, and my 2nd grader is starting books like Frog Toad and Little Bear.

anyone? What do you use for phonics instruction after completing a phonics program???

I'm not an experience homeschooler by any means :D but my plan is to continue phonics through 2nd grade (R&S). At 2nd grade, we'll also add in English/Grammar and rules-based spelling.

You said you were wondering if it's overkill to add in CLE. What is it that you hope to add by doing CLE? You seem to have phonics, reading & spelling covered. I guess CLE would add....? grammar? formal reading comprehension? some writing?

Thanks for everyone's input!!!

I would probably not do both AAS and ETC.

Would you do AAS with CLE200? I'm just looking at reinforcement for some phonics/reading skills that they've already "learned" but might need review of.

I am no expert, but my dd is completing OPG which will put her at a 4th grade level in reading by the time she finishes it. Then we are going to do McGuffey's Third reader. We are also doing AAS1 (her spelling skills are nowhere close to her reading skills (she's young). I'm not familiar with the other programs you mention, but I can say that if I'd tied my daughter's spelling skills (or lack thereof) to her reading she'd not be reading where she is today. Just a thought, because I had no idea the two skills were completely separate!

Thanks for this, too ... I hadn't thought about that about not linking the spelling and reading skills too much ...

Good point ... I think all of the above but I do need to look at each LU to see what is covered. Edited by mommy5

I would do either CLE LA (for grammar, spelling, and handwriting) or Growing with Grammar and AAS together. I assume you'll continue the writing portion and move to IEW when each child finishes?

We are still in the foundations stage of PAL reading, but I remember Jill Pike saying that after PAL, your child has learned the phonics they need. After that, you just practice. I probably wouldn't do ETC unless my kid really really wanted to. When your student has trouble reading a word, just code it to show how it is read. I definitely wouldn't do CLE reading or another full phonics program.

Thank you for saying this ... I struggle with feeling like I am not doing enough. Should I continue the writing with IEW ... I wasn't sure if they were too young for it...

We haven't started the writing yet. I would keep working on the skills at the level you are at until they are ready to move up. If that is copywork and dictation, then I would just buy a WWE workbook or something from CurrClick. Maybe get a writing journal (Lakeshore has them) that has a prompt if you would like to try some creative writing.

Well, I'd likely do AAS (that's what we did when we finished phonics). Then in 3rd you can look at adding in CLE English (again, that's what we're doing, less for phonics, more for LA, but in 4th because I didn't catch on in time for 3rd).

So, do you like CLE 300 better than 200?

I don't have either yet :). But they do so much review it's definitely possible to jump in on 3rd. We did a bit of 2nd grade English - not a lot - over a 2 year period (R&S) and my DD passed into CLE 400 on the assessment tests. Since there is so much review, we'll learn together what we haven't covered yet (diagramming) when it gets here. So with that in mind, I think it's very possible to jump into 3rd without doing 2nd.
