Already behind...

We started school September 3rd. Usually we jump right in, but this year we used the first week to ease into things, so we only did review of LA and Math from last year. The next week went well...and then my Granny passed away...we had to travel over 14 hours there and back and we stayed to visit family for a few days and I also made the program for the service, and before I knew it the last two weeks disappeared. We did maybe two days of school in two weeks. *sigh* I really despise playing catch up this early on.

Yeah, I'm pretty sure you're not the only one behind. :tongue_smilie:

We're only 1 week behind in Math, but I think we're approx. 5-6 weeks behind in phonics/reading (that's what happens when you hop curricula and don't settle down until a month and a half into the school year...) And our reading plan is pretty full, so there's not going to be any doubling up on it to play catch up...not any time soon.

:grouphug::grouphug: I'm sorry about your Granny. :grouphug::grouphug:

I could have written your post 2 years ago. We started school slowly that year, adding a subject at a time. Then my grandmother was diagnosed with cancer and it progressed very quickly. All of a sudden she was in hospice and we needed to make a 13 hour trip in the middle of the night. I made it there a day before she died. :( We stayed through the week and then had a very hard time getting back into the groove. October was a blur and I'm not sure that we had any "normal" days. But you know what? We ended the year "caught up" and "on time". We easily made up time along the way, doubling up on math here and there, doing a few things in the evenings occasionally, and even some weekends. But I am talking spreading it over 8 months, so it wasn't a big deal.

Take your time and grieve. I didn't do that and I am still having some problems with it. I tried to just keep busy and not think about it, and I wish I would have taken more time back then to heal. And let your children heal and talk about Granny if they need to.

If school is on hold for a week or two or more, don't worry about it. That is the beauty of homeschooling. It is part of your lifestyle and it works for you instead of the other way around. Your kids will be fine. :grouphug:

I think you need to think in terms of what you want your kids to learn this year, rather than finishing X number of lessons in a curriculum. Teach your kids (after taking time to grieve!), not the curriculum.

Those two weeks aren't a big deal compared to the rest of the year, and there are probably lessons you can skip or condense. Will the concept be taught again next year? Then don't spend a ton of time on it this year. You don't need to do every page or fill in every blank.

Sorry about your grandmother :(

As for being behind - well, we didn't START until the end of September (not for some lofty "kids should have summer" tirade on my end; I just couldn't make curricula decisions). I'm still waiting on a couple pieces of curricula. So right now we're doing a bit of science reading, math, vocabulary, and history; next week we add in spelling, grammar, writing, more formal science.

No worries. We only take off a few days when the public schools take off weeks, so we'll catch up - and so will you.

Academics need to take a back burner for you right now. Just do what you HAVE to do - grieve first.

I think you have to redefine your concept of "behind". You had to cope with the loss of your grandmother, and you visited with family - those are two very important things.

We moved to Texas in July. I started school with the kids at the beginning of August simply because it was too hot to do anything else (and I was desperate for some kind of schedule). Since we never start that early, you could say that we were "ahead". But, it is nearly October and we are still not completely into our curriculum. Actually, I just ordered the rest of the materials we need. So, it kind of feels like we are "behind".

In reality, I know I'm doing the best I can during a very challenging transition.

Everything is going to be OK. ;)

:grouphug: to you as well. I was very close with my Granny and it sounds like you were with yours as well. I am happy for her and know that she is at peace now...but my heart is broken too. It's a lonely road to walk.

I write week numbers on my planning sheets that correspond with the week #s in my curricula (I'm using pieces of a few, trying to stay on the same weeks in each so as not to confuse myself).

One week I had to stretch into two, so I wrote week 2 and 2a in my log.

This week's log is labeled 6... d. :tongue_smilie: We had two trips back to back + medical issues, and haven't been able to get back into our routine. I planned from the get-go to school year-round for precisely this reason, so I'm not too worried (yet).

You are not alone. :grouphug:

Great idea! :)
