stephanie Posted July 17, 2008 Posted July 17, 2008 I was wondering if anyone knew of any classes that he could take to learn this. Right now he just carves sticks into little rods, but that's it. I'm going to try to look into classes at Michael's or Hobby Lobby, but I was wondering if anyone had personal experience with it. Thanks! Quote
Rosie_0801 Posted July 18, 2008 Posted July 18, 2008 Don't know about classes, but I've seen books on amazon about whittling and soap carving. Being in the SCA, I've also seen guys sitting about whittling spoons. Not much help, but there we go... :) Rosie Quote
Lostinabook Posted July 18, 2008 Posted July 18, 2008 You might want to see if there are any folk schools in your area. My dad loves woodcarving & takes classes at Silver Dollar City every spring but that would be a bit of a commute for you guys! :) Quote
FloridaLisa Posted July 18, 2008 Posted July 18, 2008 My ds used to love woodcarving and my dh found a woodcarving group of men that met regularly. Some of them *turned* bowls and such and showed their work at art fairs, but novices were welcome. Dh took ds several times until that interest fell by the wayside. :001_smile: We also ordered some carving kits that had roughly-shaped wooden ducks and such, that ds could refine. I can't remember the name of the catalog . . . it could possibly have been Woodcraft. Also, looking on the Woodcraft site to see if that was the catalog, I found this: http://www.woodcraft.com/education.aspx Hope you find something ~ Lisa Quote
Starr Posted July 18, 2008 Posted July 18, 2008 My ds takes classes at the local Arts Council and there is a woodcarving group in a neighboring village. Good luck on your hunt. Quote
skimerinkydo Posted July 18, 2008 Posted July 18, 2008 As a boy scout Dh carved neckerchief slides and sold them to other scouts. He found lots of neckerchief ideas from his father's old boy's life magazines. Definately look for a woodcarver's group in your area. Woodcarving is a great hobby. Quote
Tina Posted July 18, 2008 Posted July 18, 2008 The guy who does it at Silver Dollar City said not to waste money on the carving sets they sell at Michael's and such. They can't be sharpened. There are books on it out there! Quote
