Karen in CO
My older dd has asthma and has been playing cello for a year. This year she's in an orchestra class with 28 other string instruments. She's had to come home from school a couple of times after orchestra because of severe asthma attacks in class. She's allergic to trees so I am fairly certain that the rosin dust in the room is the cause of her problems. I'm making an appointment with her allergist and her orchestra teacher, school nurse, and dean. In the meantime, does anyone have any ideas? Would an air purifier that runs between orchestra classes help? Moving orchestra from the music room to the auditorium? A dust mask? Switching the whole school to hypoallergenic rosin? I know we have lots of musicians and lots of allergies here. Has anyone had this trouble before? Help me brainstorm. Thanks.
Mrs Mungo
I think a mask would probably help. Doing her inhaler before class might also help.
AK_Mom4
It's been our experience that the dust travels down. If the orchestra room has a tiered floor, she might do better on an upper level. But that would put her at the back of the cello section at best, so probably not a good choice. I second the mask option....
