MIL very ill w/ mysterious fever, please pray!

Recommended Posts

My dear mil had a fever last week and had some tests run. They could not explain it but put her on an antibiotic.

She went into the hospital day before yesterday and had been running a fever of almost 103 which they could not bring down. Running all kinds of tests but so far nothing conclusive. Some test results have not come back.

This morning dh's sister called and said mil's fever shot up to 106 during the night and she is not very responsive. They still don't know why. They are planning to move her to a bigger hospital but I'm sure that depends now on how stable she is.

Really, that is all I know for now. It is all very mysterious and frustrating. BUT...I have to say that she is the most loving, faith-filled mil I could have.

TIA for your prayers!

Has she been tested for West Nile Virus?

I wondered this, too.

Also, I would ask for a test for Babesiosis. Both Babesia Microti and Babesia Duncani. Both can cause high fevers, but often get overlooked. Regular antibiotics wouldn't help. I know of several people who almost died before this was caught. It's often not on doc's radars, as sometimes people (docs) lump it in with malaria, and think of it as a tropical disease, rather than one that can be all over the US.

ETA: I'm sorry. I overlooked the purpose of your post, which was to ask for prayer. If I overstepped in offering an idea, please excuse me. I'm sure your MIL has excellent care! Your MIL will be in my thoughts and prayers.

Praying...

Have they checked her brain for infections? Dh works with a guy who's mom was in the hospital with blood work that was normal and a high fever, and it was not until they did some scan of her brain that they found the infection in there. It was very dangerous, but the docs were able to treat her and she is doing well now. It is hard when the docs seem to be stumped too.

I'm sorry, FUO is extremely frustrating for doctors, patients, and their families. I'm glad to hear she is being transferred to a large medical center. She needs a team of doctors working on her, including an infectious disease specialist.

Prayers that they will discover what's causing her illness. :grouphug:

Thanks so much to everyone who has/is praying for my mil. We just returned from visiting her and will go back tomorrow. May stay overnight tomorrow, not sure.

Her fever was around 103-104 and still no answers. I wrote a post from the hospital computer in the visitor's waiting room but don't see it here. Was having a hard time staying signed on.

Anyway, mil had ovarian cancer four years ago which responded well to chemo and surgery. She has been in remission, but that is one thing they are checking as well. Her oncologist visited her in the hosp. this evening and he is also ordering tests.

Praying that this mystery is solved and she can receive effective treatment!

Have they looked into Myelodysplastic Syndrome? It is a blood disorder that can develop after chemotherapy. It's what Robin Roberts has as a result of her breast cancer treatment several years ago.

I mentioned above that my dad's leukemia started out with high fevers. What I didn't mention is that his first diagnosis was Myelodysplastic Syndrome which then transitioned into leukemia. (He had never had chemotherapy--his Myelodysplastic Syndrome was spontaneous.)

Please ask the doctors about this. I'll pray for her and your family. We've been there with weeks and weeks of unexplained illness and know how hard it is on the patient and family.

Robin,

I have never heard of this syndrome before but I will ask them about it.

  • 2 weeks later...

I'm so sorry I never updated this thread. We were very busy driving back and forth to the city where she has been in the hospital. I don't take a laptop or i-pad with me when I travel. Thank you for caring enough to check back. I'm sad to report that my MIL's cancer returned. The update is here:
