Food or supplement for energy

Recommended Posts

I have no idea why, but my energy level for the past 2 or 3 weeks has been incredibly, incredibly low. I workout 6 days a week, but no more than usual. My diet has been pretty good. Typical day is egg beaters and left over veggies with high fiber English muffin for breakfast, leftovers or salad for lunch, meat, small starch (jasmine rice usually), vegetables and big salad for dinner, apples and organic peanut butter for snack or my recent favorite, fresh mozzarel, tomatoes, and basil from my garden with balsamic drizzled over it.

I'm sleeping 7 hours and drinking a boatload of water. I'm at a loss. I don't take vitamins though, maybe I should start.

If you don't take vitamins, I'd recommend the Rainbow Light brand. You can get them from Amazon.com. They're food based and I think the body absorbs them so much better than synthetic vitamins. I ran out of my Women's Nutritional http://www.amazon.com/Rainbow-Light-Womens-Nutritional-tablets/dp/B000FH154S/ref=sr_1_11?ie=UTF8&s=hpc&qid=1216319360&sr=8-11 and rather than order some prenatal vitamins I picked some up at Walgreens or Target (can't remember). Just last week I got my Rainbow Light Prenatals and the first day I took them I felt an amazing difference. Well actually I felt a little crazy at first, too much of a burst of mental energy I think!

Anyway, that's my plug for vitamins. Fish oil can help with energy levels too. We take Carlson's lemon flavored.

Maybe your pregnant? That's my reason for wanting to sleep all. day. long. ;)

How many calories are you burning vs. taking in. My father is friend with a man who eats over 3000 cals. a day. He is a marathon runner.

The elliptical machine says I'm burning around 500 calories and then I lift for about 1/2 hour, I don't know what that burns. I guess I eat about 1500-1800 calories a day. I'm not eating enough then? I'm not losing much weight though and I have a lot to lose. Frustrating. :glare:

Thanks! It's going to be strange having a baby in the house again now that #3 is 4.

You might want to look around at the various Rainbow Light vitamins on Amazon, some have Prime shipping. There's a B-complex one that's for energy. The one I linked you have to take 6! of a day to meet the dosage, but there's a one a day version out now. In case choking down 6 horse pills doesn't appeal.

Other than vitamins...I generally feel better when I don't have sugar or refined starches in my diet. Not fun, but there it is. Caffeine can be a problem too, are your iced coffees decaf. :D

Good luck.

A lot of people are deficient in vitamin B. Whenever I feel like a slug, taking a B-complex really helps. Most people I know who take it say that it does wonders for energy level.

Warning: If taken too close to bed, it may keep you up late cleaning and doing housework :)

I agree with you. It is so hard to loose it. I love fish oil too. Also, are you getting enough lean protein and dairy?

There have been a lot of studies linking weight lost to dairy: meaning having enough in your diet.

I suggest B-Complex as well. Another thing is Vitamin D. I don't know where you live, and I know this is summer, but sometimes people don't get enough. I started a D supplement and have felt better. I also take a B comles AND vitamin C.

Oh yeah, ETA: Walmart carries a brand called Spring Valley. Someone who'd done a lot of research on it told me that this is a GREAT, more natural brand. So that's what I get. I hope she was right! And the things I'm taking DO seem to be helping me.

OH oh! Pick me, pick me!

I just started taking Body Balance liquid supplement w/ vitamins and minerals. It's made by Life Force and I have to say, just in 3 days, I already feel more energy. I drink 4 oz every morning and I don't get that 3:00 slump anymore and I wake up refreshed and in a good mood.

If you want more info, let me know.

I've read that weight loss can result in flu-like symptoms because toxins are stored in your fat cells and when you burn them they release the toxins back into your body making you feel ill. I would try boosting my immunity with some zinc and hydrate to flush my system.

This is true--it happened to me last year when I lost about 10 pounds. It passed after a week or so.

But consider going to the doctor if it continues. You might be low in something essential--iron, for example.

Take care of yourself.

Are you eating enough protein, and some good fats? I know I feel a huge difference in my energy level when I add in more protein. Your diet sounds very healthy but also very lean.

IMO adding some good fats might help (avocado) as well as Iron and Vit B

I take fish oil tablets, Nordic Naturals is a good brand.

I take children's vitamins as otherwise it is so much iron it hurts my stomach

Lately I haven't been actually. I usually keep a supply of Trader Joe's Flax seed chips and guacamole on hand as well as this fantastic Omega 3 fortified trail mix, but I have been to TJ's is a month and I'm out. I have been eating raw almonds a couple of days a week.

When I eat really low carb, less than 60 g a day, I have a lot more energy, but I'm not sure how healthy that is. Maybe I need to gradually increase the carbs and see when I hit a wall.

Thank you. :)

On your diet I would be in bed, just about.

I get chronically low iron, and I have to take a supplement, even if I eat meat most days, which I do nowadays, because I just went through yet another phase of trying to get through life without another iron supplement and I am soooo tired.

The other thing is, as well as getting your iron tested, get your thyroid tested.

And, for me, making sure I get enough protein every single meal is a key. And I am not into low carb- just into getting plenty of protein. So, could you add protein powder to those muffins? And make sure you have a significant serve of protein at lunch and dinner. I cant see any in your dinner choices, except for in the cheese.
