Well, you mentioned iPad stuff. Something I would like is a way to preview a thread on the iPad. Right now you can hover a mouse over a thread on a PC to see the first few lines of a thread, but on the iPad there isn't an option like this. This is the main problem I have with using my iPad to access the forums.

Oh, and not related to the iPad, but some way of being notified if you are quoted or if someone mentions your screen name would be nice. It is sort of a pain to continually check a thread to see if someone has responded to something you've said.

If there is a way to do this already, sorry. :)

There has been clamoring for instillation of "Tapatalk" for a very long time. I presume this is one of the changes you have in mind? It is supposed to be a very easy addition.

What might not be so easy is improving the search function of vBulletin. I suppose what they publish is what we get. But to get a decent search of the forum one has to do a "site" search via Google for anything but a basic search.

Other than that I think the forum works pretty well.

But I look forward to ideas I've not imagined.

Best wishes in your new role.

Bill

  • The search engine is useless, so yay! to fixing it!
  • Yes, when your username is mentioned in a thread, would be great if you were notified. Ravelry does this and it is awesome. In fact Ravelry overall is a great model.
  • The ability to view more posts on each page. For example, would love the option to view, say, 60 posts on a page and eliminate the need to"go to the next page"
  • Like and dislike buttons.
  • Most popular thread links from last 24 hours, last week, last month, last year.
  • Master status for certain posters who have ben here forever, allowing us to see immediately when a "master" has weighed in on a topic. (naninmass, 8fillstheheart, etc.)
  • More smilies!
  • More storage in inbox, please!
  • Ability to edit titles of threads, PLEASE! There is nothing worse than noticing you've mispelled your as you're when you are posting a grammar question :tongue_smilie::tongue_smilie:
  • ability to add animated blinkies to sigs, like countdowns, etc. also, for people who are in say the book club, it would be great if we could add blinkies to our sigs to indicate that, but right now it is both too difficult and often not enou space.

I a, sure i will think of more lol.

This is so, so BIG to me...please retain the feature to read "new posts." It's the primary way I use the boards (aside from searching, which other posters have already addressed). I've noticed some boards are dropping this and it makes it difficult for me to keep tabs on what people are talking/concerned about.

You can do this now by going to the control panel. Scroll down the menu on the left side of the screen to 'Settings & Options', then click 'Edit Options'. Scroll down to 'Thread Display Options', then 'Number of posts to show per page'. You can choose 5, 10, 20, 30, 40 or 50 per page. Then go to the bottom of the page and 'save changes'.

I second better search! THat would be awesome! I'd also like more subforums in the k-8 and HS forums. Either break it down by discipline or further divide the k-8 by age. Those of us with really young children don't have much to contribute in questions about curricula for an 8th grader, kwim? We've also discussed a separate Pre-k/k board, which I'd love to see. I don't think I'd want the general forum divided up too much though, I kind of enjoy that one in it's current kind of crazy state. I think it's more for chatting, so it doesn't need to be too organized. When I'm looking for information (like in K-8), I'd like it a bit more organized.

I'm not sure how I feel about a like/dislike button. Maybe ONLY a like button? Dislike seems like it has the potential to get mean.

I LOVE the idea of notification if someone quotes you or mentions you by name. That would be really great!

Is it possible to have settings for the "new posts" search so it could give you "new posts" from only certain forums? For example, when I click "new posts" I'm not particularly interested in the highschool boards (my eldest is 4), and I'd love to just see new posts in the general, K-8, and language forums...

Bam!

More PM space given.

Since you're in such a generous mood, Mr. Genie, may I please have $1,000,000?

:D

I love the idea of a 'like' button. A dislike button, not so much.

Oh and everything Halcyon said. Wow! Apparently this has been keeping her up at night. Please think of her poor, tired self and proceed accordingly. :D

Oh and one more thing. Welcome! :001_smile:

The ability to edit and/or delete your own posts indefinitely :D

:iagree:

Please don't add a Like and Dislike button. I was so glad when rep points ended.

:iagree: All the like/dislike buttons will do is bring out the junior high b*tch cl*ques, resulting in the mods having oh so many more reports about nasty people and oh so many more emails complaining about getting this dislike removed and that dislike cancelled. And, at least 68.5% of the threads will be poor-me-pity-party posts that start with "why does nobody 'like' me?"

Fun.

Not.

The forms might already have this option.

But I would like one button that would search for all threads you have posted on. Right now I just goto search, and search for all posts made by ME. :)

You can. Go to your profile, statistics tab, click on all posts. There is another option for all threads started.

It is one of the easier forums to navigate I've been on. I would like it if when I click on a thread it took me to the first unread post without having to click 'view first unread'.

Can't you do this already? Instead of clicking on the thread name, click on the little blue box to the left of the thread name. That takes you to the first unread.

Not all subforums (or forums) are in the Forum Jump at the bottom of the page. I use that feature, so I don't see the Expert Exchange for example.

Thanks for the larger storage :)

I don't want a like/dislike feature. It sounds like it was really nasty when it was around before (rep). The stars got nasty enough for a time.

I can see a subforum for PreK, but I see problems with too many subforums. I wouldn't like things separated by subject because then I'd be much less likely to read about programs if I wasn't looking for a specific subject. I like the separation by stage - and adding the logic stage has worked very nicely for me in keeping K-8 manageable.

I have really disliked some other forums where signatures get too large and I don't like too much animation, so I'd have some concern about signatures getting too large. On other boards I've seen it get difficult to read because sigs are too big.

I don't think more subforums would be helpful. If there is a designated math subforum, only people with math problems or questions will visit it; whereas when there is a general curriculum subforum, you get more visitors. So maybe a person logs on who has question about a grammar curriculum, but they see your question about math and can answer it based on their experience. If there were subforums, the person with the grammar question never would have visited the math forum and would not have answered your question.

Likewise, if the forums get separated into too many age groups, then the parents of older kids aren't likely to visit the younger kids' subforums. This would be unfortunate for the moms of younger kids since the parents of older kids have BTDT and have quite a bit of advice and experience to offer moms with young children.
