How do you decide when to let your children read which books?

Recommended Posts

We have a great opportunity to See Jane Eyre performed by homeschool students. They are amazing actors and we have enjoyed Tom Sawyer, Anne of Green Gables, Little Women and Midsummer Night's Dream. Would you bring ds9.9 and ds7.6 to see the show? Also I would have to let them read the simplified Great Illustrated Classic version of this if I decide to bring them so that they know the story. I will go see it no matter what.

Thanks!

I let my children read whatever books they express an interest in. I believe that a child who picks up a book too early either will get bored and put it away, or will understand part of the book, but I have not seen any evidence that it would be harmful.

My DD read many classics in elementary school; now upon rereading them in high school she realizes that some were over her head back then, but that's OK.

For your specific question: I can not imagine Jane Eyre really holding the interest of a 7 year old boy; I would not have taken my son at that age, because it would have bored him.

Thanks for the response. I will just have to go myself and will not plan to have them read the book yet. They did really enjoy the whole unabridged version of Little Women audio book on lit2go. They also enjoy A little Princess a lot. They love Huckleberry Finn. I am sure there are things they don't fully pick up, but I am ok with it as long as they are able to enjoy it.

I tend to give dd things I think she might possibly like, and not worry if she can't read them. I gave her a book recently that I was quite unsure about, but I though if it was too hard I would just read it aloud or wait until later.

I tend to think Jane Eyer might not be appreciated by younger boys as well, but you never know. You might try the book and just see what they think.

Update:

I just emailed the director of the show and she says that it is for middle schoolers and up. I should have asked her opinion for A Tale of Two Cities we saw 1.5 years ago. My then 6 yr old boy was way overwhelmed by the show even though I read the simplified version befor we saw the show.

They will have to stay with grandpa on the day I see the show with older students and their moms.

Thanks!
