Chrismtas Thread - what to get for the 7 year old girl who has everything?

Recommended Posts

I'm kind of at a loss what direction to go with DD for Christmas this year and suggstions would be greatly appreciated! :-)

DD will be 7.5 (8 in the spring). I think this is the last year she will "believe", so I want to make it special!

She hasn't asked for any toys for Christmas since the Christmas she was 4 or 5.

Last year (at 6) all she really asked Santa for was a violin (she got it) and "surprises". She took lessons for a few months but didn't end up loving it as much as she thought - which was okay by me.

She is a very mature 7 (and the oldest of 3 girls). She's been "over" American Girl dolls for about 2 years (that was one of the last toys she asked for). She was never into Barbies. She is into dance - and takes 5 dance classes/week.

She would really love a laptop or a cell phone that could text (to text Grandma and Auntie - and probably me from her bedroom!). I don't hink I'm ready for her to have her "own" laptop - she does have a kindle fire that she can text from - . She has a nice bike and scooter - though rarely uses them - most of her free time is listening to, dancing to, and now trying to write music.

She isn't really "into" clothes - super pick and wears mostly Lands End uniform stuff (even though she is homeschooled I still end up ordering uniforms - she just prefers the plain classic look to the stuff you see at the department stores!)

The only thing I can think of would be a sewing machine - she has a "kid" one but I really never let her pull it out b/c it is tough to use. I would consider getting her a lowish end brother (150ish), so at least I know how to use it and it takes the same bobbins as mine, etc - but then that jsut seems wastful b/c I rarely get a chance to use mine and she could use it any time she wants - why buy/store another??

So, Hive - any suggestions for the "has everything" 7 year old who only wants surprises for Christmas?

P.S. I would LIKE to think that she will come up with more ideas before then but last year she knew from the summer she wanted a violin and never asked for anything other than "surprises" up until Christmas.

My 5 yo DD on the other hand - she will have a list a MILE long! :-)

What about giving her an "experience"? Like a trip to a cool museum, or a nice dinner out, or something like that.

The only other idea that I can think of is a gift to charity in her name... but I don't think that is the kind of special thing you are looking for...

We adopted the "Something she wants, something she needs, something to wear, something to read" suggestion a few years ago. I'm pretty sure I heard about it here :)

For your dd I'd probably do something music related as her "want" - maybe a new CD? Something she needs could be a cute bag for dance or something more practical like a travel kit (I don't know why, but my kids love having their own travel kits with toothpaste, shampoo, etc.). Something to wear could be for dance or a cozy new pair of pj's. Then I'd purchase a nice, hardcover book that she'd enjoy.

I thought about the experience - but since it will be from Santa - that gets a little tricky, kwim?

It just gets so much more complicated b/c my other DD will have a laundry list of things/ideas - so I would hate for there to be more/better stuff for her.

The baby will be hard too - being the 3rd girl, we pretty much have everything she could possibly want!

I just wish I could think of something where she would be WOWED when she came down on Christmas morning. Every other Christmas it was pretty easy- though nothing will top her excitment when she was 21 months and got the Butterscotch Pony!

I know there is so much magic to Christmas outside of gifts and AFTER Santa - but I just feel like this is my last chance to see that look in her eyes.

The Santa budget is typically $400-$500 per girl (total) if that helps anyone think of things - typically one "larger" gift ($200ish) and then a bunch of smaller things that are sometimes more practical (fuzzy slippers, books, craft kits, etc)

Let her pick items to redecorate her room and then let Santa surprise her with what she ends up with.

DD13 has had 2 Christmas that were bedroom redo themed and she loved them both.

Such a cute idea and maybe I'll save that for a future year - we just moved into this house this year - so we/she just did her room - but that's an AWESOME idea for the future!

Tickets to a ballet or traveling broadway musical

Private dance lessons with a great teacher

An ipod so she can listen to music and tune her sisters out

A video camera and tripod so she can make movies of herself (we did this for my 7 year old last year, the kodak waterproof version of a flip camera...she loves it)

The video camera and tripod is an AWESOME idea and it never crossed my mind!

SHe has a digital camera and it can take a little video - but she would absolutely LOVE to be able to take videos of her sisters and dog or set it up to take vidoes of herself while dancing.

I will definately start looking into that - it might be the winner! Thanks so much for all the ideas ladies!

We just bought DD a laptop as a surprise. We got a 13" used Macbook off of craigslist and it has been a huge hit. I thought she'd like it but not like this. I recommend a laptop. We wanted a used one since she is only 8 and this is her first computer.

If she likes crafts at all Sculpey clay is great for this age. So much nicer to work with than playdough but doesn't get hard unless/until you bake it. Lots of tools to make fancier things and lots of books with ideas on different projects. Hobby Lobby and Michaels often have 40% off coupons which really brings the cost down.

Yeh, the baby brother thing would really be a great surprise. Although you only have 3 months...:D

I was going to mention something like the FLIP camera (I'm sure there is something better/cooler/easier/more expensive (LOL!) now. We got one a couple of years ago, it was actually DH's gift, but the kids love it.

Or a small laptop would be very cool, you can get a decent one really cheap these days and there is no end to what you can do for add ons...buy special software, a subscription to something educational that you think she would enjoy (netflix, if you don't already have it, Mark Kistler art, etc etc). I'm not ready to get one for my son, but I know it would really bring that magic to his eyes and I think we are definitely in our last Santa year with him. I always tell him they are very expensive so he would totally think it was from Santa, he wouldn't think we could afford it. ;) So maybe I will cave.

Let us know what you decide. :)

Some things I'm thinking about for my youngest are:

One of those BabyCakes cake makers so she can make mini cupcakes. She's celiac and just learning to cook.

Some art supplies of her own and little boxes to store them in like her sister has instead of sharing.

She likes Littlest Pet Shop this year because she's found that her friend has some, but she has been collecting Schleichs with her sister for years and likes dragons this year.

An archery set - she's into medieval weapons - the girl likes history - at least costumes, food, stories, and weapons

We do a want, need, read and wear for Christmas presents. Everybody knows what to expect.

Another great idea! She really really liked Brave and afterwards actually got a TOY archery set (I wa shocked she even asked for it at Toys R Us b/c she is usally so anti-toy- but my Mom was in town and told the girls they could each pick something - I thought for sure she would pick something from the Vera Bradly store instead - but she loved this little archery set and asked when she could get a real one - I don't think I'd go ALL THE WAY to "real", but perhaps a nice nerf one or something similar)

This has worked great for our 3 kiddos. It has helped to keep me in check too...when they were little is was so hard to stop buying for them. We have saved "big" ticket items for the teen years. My 16 year old is really looking forward to a phone and computer sometime before he moves out
