Xuzi
DD's grammar lesson today was on converting singular nouns into plural nouns, and how to know when to use s, es, or ies. On the practice worksheet she was given several words to change from singular to plural, and while she had an easy time with most of then, she got stuck on "sky". She kept saying it didn't make sense. I repeated the rule a few more times for, and when she said it *still* didn't make sense, I asked her why, and she said: "Because there's only one sky!":lol:

freerange
There are if you allow for time-last night's sky, tonight's sky, this month's skies.

Leanna Tomlinson
We did that lesson last week, and my dd got stumped by the same thing!
Chrysalis Academy
Oh man, my dd is the same way. Don't even get me started on math word problems that confound her sense of logic - we might as well throw them out the window as expect her to solve a problem that doesn't "make sense!"

morosophe
I'd just point to one of my favorite hymns, "For the Beauty of the Earth." (The second line is "For the glory of the skies"...) I did just tell that story to my husband, though, who enjoyed it.
Ellyndria
We did that lesson recently, and my DS was very indignant about it also. "There's only one sky! There can't be skies!"
Chrysalis Academy
Try singing "You Are My Sunshine" to her . . . ;) My dd's pet peeve is the word "peoples" - which you find surprisingly often in history books. She says "people is already plural - peoples is ungrammatical!" She's got a point, but um, sweetie, can we get back to the chapter now???
ChicoryChick
I enjoyed reading this post last week and knowing that this lesson waa coming up was crious how my son would respond. Sure enough today we get to sky/skies and my ds goes "Skies? that doesn't make any sense. :) People is more than person, peoples is more than one people group, confusing I know. Same with fish and fishes. Fish is the singular and plural of one type of fish. Fishes is the plural form of more than one type of fish.

Kathryn
I thought of this post this morning as DS did singular/plural in his handwriting book and they had sky/skies. Sure enough, he announced "that doesn't make any sense! There's only one sky."

We had that talk yesterday. Again.
