PeacefulChaos
 Ok, here's my dilemma. I want to grow my hair out. I don't like it short. What I'm trying to decide is if I should: 1. cut it to a different shape - the pics are of my hair today. I really don't care for it at all right now. But I don't know if I should bother cutting it at all because that might just sort of prolong it, kwim? So I'm trying to decide if I should trim it up (by shortening the longest layers and making it more even) because I might like that better in the meantime? Or just leave it? 2. do something different with the bangs. I'm leaning toward no on this, because if they are anywhere from the top of my eyebrow to the bottom of my cheekbone, my glasses make them do this weird flippy thing that drives me nuts. :) And I don't really care for super short (above eyebrow) bangs. 3. add some more color. It's dark blonde-ish naturally (my lighting isn't great so it might be hard to tell) and she put blonde highlights in when we cut it in May. I'm thinking more highlights and maybe a little deep red/burgundy. Or maybe a brighter red for fall... hmm.... :) So anyway, should I trim it? Let it keep growing? Help! :)
clarkacademy
I don't do anything at all to my har except wash and brush it. Every year I cut off about a foot maybe more which still leaves it to the middle of my back. My gramma always said leave it alone so I always have. Entropymama
Pay the money to go to a really good salon. Do it once, explain to them that you're trying to grow it out and ask them to give you a game plan. Really good stylists are like sculptors, they can do amazing things. Then do your best to follow the plan they've given you at a less expensive salon, if needed. They might even be able to cut it so you don't have to do anything - just let it grow. We had a stylist do that for my son who wanted 'surfer' hair. It looked just ok at first but as it grew out, it looks just like he wanted. I've found that Aveda salons are good. Good luck! Peaceful Isle
I think it looks pretty :) If you wanted to get more "shape", you could get the bottom part cut a little more. Maybe shorter in the back, or even an under cut would be really cute on your shape face. Anyways, I like short hair. I just got mine cut a few days ago :) Dh is still trying to get used to it ! :tongue_smilie:
justLisa
I hate fixing my hair. I mean I just do not do it. If I cannot step out of the shower, comb it and let it be I need a different style. And I have wavy-ish hair so that sucks. I would go pixie if I didn't hate getting a hair cut. Wow, I'm a lot of help  I think your hair is cute. If it is shorter does it require styling? That would be something to think about. justLisa
About the bangs. You'd be super cute with bangs. I should have them, but they irritate me. Now I am thinking about it again though....
PeacefulChaos
Oh, I forgot to add, I don't really fix my hair, either. I wash it in the shower (usually at night), comb it when it's wet (sometimes), and brush it in the morning when I get up. I don't do products and I don't use any styling tools. I mean, I might throw a barrette in it or something if I feel like it's too blah for the day or something... but yeah, I don't spend time 'doing' my hair. I'm a 'wash and go' girl. :) I miss being able to at least put it in a ponytail, something...

I do have a product from Biolage I like that just gives it a little something. I tend to go frizzy.
Catwoman
I think your hair looks really cute the way it is right now. It doesn't look like it's "growing out;" it just looks like a nice style. :001_smile:

Amethyst
Kara, I am going through the exact same thing right now. I cut it short, liked it for a while, then decided to grow it out. Last time I went to my hairdresser I told her to shape it better for growing out. BIG MISTAKE! I hate it. I don't know what happened. She's always done a good job of cutting, so I'm guessing it's just that awkward growing out phase, and not the hairdresser's fault. I wish I had just left the little bit of length that I had so I'd feel like I was making more progress. I think your hair looks nice right now. So, I would vote for keeping it for now. When you have more length, you can have it trimmed.
~Tara~
ok so you don't presently use products or styling tools...but would you be opposed to using a straightening iron? I think, as mentioned, bringing the back up a bit, maybe under cut some, could really work. I think some bangs would work too. Then just use the straightening iron to smooth it all out and keep it curled in toward the neck.
Trilliums
If you want it to grow out, I'd just leave it alone. It looks good as it is and once it gets a bit more length you could go to a higher end salon and splurge on a cut for it at the length you want. I think it just seems to be in an awkward transitional stage because you envision it differently. GL with whatever you decide. :)

Then just use the straightening iron to smooth it all out and keep it curled in toward the neck. Well, I wouldn't necessarily be opposed to it if I didn't have to do it every day. I would probably just leave it be most of the time, and maybe straighten it for church or something. BUT the problem is that my hair is not perfectly straight as it is (weird, bumpy-ish waves) and it's really resistant to trying to straighten it. I've had two straightening irons work on it - both of which cost $100. :svengo: (neither were mine) I have a $20 one from WalMart that doesn't touch it - it literally looks exactly the same. :001_huh: So that's my main problem with that - I just don't have a straightener that works on my hair, and I don't have $100 to spend on one. :tongue_smilie:
PeacefulChaos
Oh, and I forgot to add, I do like me with bangs, but I don't care for me+glasses+bangs. They flip out like crazy. I've always done bangs this length: ETA: Oh my word, I look like my mom in that picture. :willy_nilly: :svengo:

Maybe you could get some hair, skin, and nails vitamins to help it grow out faster.
PeacefulChaos
Well, the bangs are cute. You are cute all around! Thanks! I look at the pictures from the spring (before cutting my hair) and they don't even bother me much (despite needing to lose weight)... I feel like the hair I have now doesn't do me any favors in that area, and actually makes me look bigger. :glare: Oh, well. Hair grows. That's why I cut it in the first place! :tongue_smilie:
songbirdie
One thing to remember when you're letting it grow out if you have a layered cut: You'll have to get the layers cut a bit differently each time you have a trim because as the length grows, the shape of the layers changes. So if you are letting the bottom grow out and only having a micro trim periodically, you'll still want to go in and get it "shaped". I've cut hair for years non-professionally, and that's what I've had to do to every layered hairstyle as it was growing out. Now - nix all that if you want a blunt cut with no layers. If that's what you're going for then you just keep trimming the bottom until it's even, and then let go until it's the length you want it, only trimming if your ends look bad. All that said, I think it looks cute like it is! :)

melissad2
I have weird wavy hair too. I use some mousse and an instyler when I style it. It is cut where it is longer in the front shorter in the back with bangs.
KidsHappen
If you want to grow it out to all one length then you need to leave it alone and let it grow. If you intend to have some layers then you can get some layers put in now to give it more shape and then they can be touched up once your hair grows out some. Don't get bangs. If they bother you at all they will bother you even more as they grow out. For now you can use handbands, barrettes or other clips to pull it back and give it some different looks. A few curls with a curling iron would look really cute to and as pp suggested and undercut would add some body and shape and would still work well as it is growing out. justamouse
The two cosmo kids behind me say, that if you want something different while it grows out, more highlights sidebangs layer it, but it will take the weight of your hair out and you may feel like you have no hair left. I think you should leave it, it's pretty.
Rebel Yell
Hmmmmm..... It doesn;t look bad right now- maybe not what you want, but not bad. What are you trying to grow it into? Trimming a tiny bit off the ends (WATCH the hairdresser- make her SHOW YOU how much she is going to cut before she picks up the scissors) can give it some shape and make you like it more while it gets where you want it to. It might add a month or two to the growing out, but you'll enjoy it more. So: either trim the very bottom, not touching the layers if you're going for one length, OR trim the layers a little for shape. About straightening irons: yeah, the expensive ones are amazing... but try to take very thin partings of your hair. Also, try vertical parting instead of horizontal. Worth a try! helena
I vote getting it shaped and highlighted. That way you get to have fun and feel refreshed but you're still on the path to growing it out. Edited September 20, 2012 by helena
Ali in OR
I vote for do nothing now; wait 6 months when it should be a couple of inches longer and get it cut in a longer style then. Maybe highlights too at that time.
