janetwhitson
My 5 year old son consistently writes his letters and numbers backwards. Is this normal? How do I correct it? It frustrates him that he is constantly doing it wrong.
KatieJ
Is he left handed? My youngest was left handed and began writing things backwards. I did not make a huge deal of it and eventually it was all fine.

Pamela H in Texas
Just practice it correctly. Reading will help a lot also as letters are consistent in books. Though it is normal to have reversals til 7, even 8, A LOT of kids will remediate during kindergarten :)

Ellie
What did you use to teach him to write? Not all handwriting instruction gives specific instructions on where letters and numbers start and stop. Spalding and its spin-offs do. I think Zaner Bloser might. Children can't always tell directionality just by watching someone else do it or copying/tracing. Your local library might have a copy of WRTR (the manual for Spalding); if so, you could check it out and use just the handwriting scripts and directions. janetwhitson
He started to learn to write in public pre-K last year. We are homeschooling this year and I have the Spalding book. I have been slowly reading through it and we have just started with it. Hoping it helps.
Tammi K
I taught second grade and, each year, several of the boys in my class still had reversal. It isn't a cause for worry. Relax, it will come.
SKL
I had this same question over the past year. My girls are young 1st graders and still reverse sometimes. It's faded a lot over the past few weeks - I assume their teacher has gotten on their cases about it. I honestly don't know what to do about it other than wait it out. I would definitely not lose sleep over it. :)
