mumkins
I've narrowed it down to those two. Any thoughts on either?
justLisa
Well those two are entirely different. Soaring with spelling is a workbook with some words and little activity type exercises to go along with. It is very open and go and easy. My complaint is the lines are HUGE. Like a dinosaur with a pencil size. Phonetic zoo wouldn't work for mine, because I listened to the sample and just know it wouldn't work. It is audio based. They listen and follow along. Both teach spelling, but it's how much you want to spend and how you want to do it.
mumkins
Well, I think I'm going to go with PZ and read the lists myself instead of the CD's. Much cheaper and no worries about the pace of the CD.
Shellers
I didn't care for Soaring with Spelling at all.
Woodland_Mom
Phonetic zoo has gone quite well in our house. We use the audio, the cards, and the TM. I appreciate how the phonetic rules are emphasized and like the teacher notes about how to cover those things with my kids. Voth of my boys like doing it independently and seem to be retaining the things they're learning.
Mommy7
Angela, do you feel they are learning the actual rules or just the words from sheer repetition? My dc seem to think the jingles aren't very good. How do you implement it? Just trying to pick up some tips because I love that PZ is so independent and spelling is something I need to be non teacher intensive. Syndeyjg
We started using pz this year, and my 5th grader loves it. I think she is definitely learning the spelling rules. She might be memorizing a few words, but that's ok. Neither one of us wants to go back to worksheets!

I have not asked my kids to memorize the rule cards/jingles, but I think the program helps my kids to process the rules and understand them. They learn about the rule from me when we first go over the card. Together, we look for the words in the list that follow the rule and we talk about the "rule breaker" words. Then, they listen to the rule explained/repeated in the audio several times. Rather then just memorizing the rule, they're intuitively thinking about spelling, seeing examples, and practicing that spelling pattern/rule until they master it.
