Webster's Speller Table 4 - rule for "ent" versus "ant?"

If anyone knows the rule for this, I'd appreciate it! For that matter, if you have the source you got the rule from, I'd be interested in knowing what that is too! :)

Maybe I'll clarify that I'm referring to "ant" and "ent" at the end of words.

 

:lol: Having just read LOTR and talked about ents a lot with my kids, that made me laugh! :D

 

I don't think there is a rule, but that's why spelling requires some memorization and not just learning rules.

One tip is to look at morphemes (try to think of other related words--for example, radiate becomes radiant--use the A both times).

 

Another tip--consider a longer word and you might hear the ending pronounced. Existential - existent. Vigilante - vigilant.

 

Also pay attention to c's & g's--it has to be innocent, it can't be innocant.

 

AAS Level 7 has 3 steps covering ance/ence tips, a lot of which relate to ant/ent endings.
