Jean in Newcastle
This year I was thinking that I wanted to have dd10 blog her history and science narrations/reports. I have some questions. She is motivated by doing things with a purpose - I figured that sharing her findings in a blog would be purposeful. 1. What is the easiest way to set something like this up? I don't want to be bogged down with the details of set-up though an hour or two to get things started is ok. 2. Is it something she can add to on her own? I will review it with her but don't want to be holding her hand the whole time. 3. If we could easily add a picture of a project that would be nice. 4. Privacy? Is there a way to share it with only a couple of friends and family? 5. Is this a good idea or can you think of something else that would meet my purpose better? 6. Can you either tell me or tell me where to find instructions for doing this that are easy enough for me to follow? Our resident computer geek says that he knows nothing of blogs. I'm trying to keep him on task for his high school stuff so I don't want to pull him to work on this if I can help it.
Garga
I have a blog and it's super easy. I don't know how to make it private, however. I use wordpress.com. It only took me about an hour to figure it out, and I'm reeeeeeally bad with computer stuff. If I could do it, anyone could. I even figured out how to add a picture really easily. Very intuitive and simple. With a little bit of training, I can't imagine that she couldn't do updates by herself. You don't need to know any computer stuff. It's like writing an email. brandigirl
This year I was thinking that I wanted to have dd10 blog her history and science narrations/reports. I have some questions. I don't want to be bogged down with the details of set-up though an hour or two to get things started is ok. I like Blogger and thats what my blog is on. It took about 7 min to set up for me and then I work on it every now and then :). 2. Is it something she can add to on her own? I will review it with her but don't want to be holding her hand the whole time. Yes Blogger is so easy to work with which is why I usually tell people to use it. You can also put a word filter on blogger for personal prefrence. 3. If we could easily add a picture of a project that would be nice. Pictures are a breeze on blogger just click upload and you are good to go. 4. Privacy? Is there a way to share it with only a couple of friends and family? Yes there is you would just his the private option and then add a password. I keep mine public but put a filter on the comment section so that nothing bad makes it through. 5. Is this a good idea or can you think of something else that would meet my purpose better? I am a teen not a mother so my opnion may be biased but I get nervous with the internet. My sister is 10 and right now I may be able to get my mom to let her have a blog but would not like it. I just think there are some real sick individuals that I don't want my little sis exposed to. She is a very nice person and always wants to trust people and loves making friends which is good but not really good for an internet thing:glare: 6. Can you either tell me or tell me where to find instructions for doing this that are easy enough for me to follow? Our resident computer geek says that he knows nothing of blogs. Tell the computer geek to help mom out  ^^^^^
Catwoman
What an interesting idea, Jean! Brandigirl, thank you for your thoughtful comments and great information -- it's so helpful to have an intelligent teen's point of view on a topic like this. BTW, I just checked out the first few posts in your blog, and I love your dolphin drawing! Robin M
2nd the use of blogger. Very easy to set up and easy to use. Set up a blog for my son (now 13) who blogs stories. You can set it up so private and no one sees except for those you give the address to.
Jean in Newcastle
Thank you so much. I'm thinking seriously of doing blogger, not that it probably matters too much between the two suggestions. I'll set it up for her this weekend.
