Jen in NY
Hi All, What did you all put down for class rank? DD is applying for some fairly competitive engineering programs, and I don't want to sink her by NOT assigning a rank (uh..... 1?) but it also seems disingenous to call her valedictorian...... How did you handle this? Thanks, Jen
Barbara H
I would mark it n/a. The other alternative is to say 1 of 1 and I think that just makes homeschooling look silly. She won't be the only one who doesn't have a class rank. Many public and private schools also no longer use this system so it won't be held against her. Kathy in Richmond
Hi Jen, I used "N/A - homeschooled" for class rank & also for any question that asked me to compare my students to others in their class. On the Common App Secondary School Report form, this included the sections where I was asked to rate their schedules as most demanding/very demanding/etc/etc & the chart where I was asked to rate them top 1%/top5%/etc/etc in several categories. Jen in NY
So far, all the schools to which she is applying accept the common app, so there are limited choices to answer.... for class rank, my preferred "n/a" isn't an option, so I am going with "none." I mean, I don't want to make things hard for adcoms to figure out, but I also don't want to misrepresent things. I just hope she'll get on the table so that they can dig deeper into her application. Any opinions on GPA? (We haven't really done grades for in home courses... I am regretting this, at the moment.) ~J
regentrude
then I write 97/100 based on ACT scores (or whatever). But 97/100 for class rank would mean 97th in a class of 100, so fairly down at the bottom - whereas being in the 97th percentile on the ACT would be close to the top. What am I missing? Muttichen
We always put 1/1. They understand what that means and I don't think it makes homeschoolers look silly. It's the honest answer -- they're in a class of one!
dirty ethel rackham
We put N/A. I don't think it is relevant and could possibly be used against the student. While they are in the top 5%, they are also in the bottom 5%. Our local high school has done away with class rank because we have way too many high performing students taking honors and AP classes. A straight A student with a reasonably rigorous curriculum can end up outside of the top 10% of the class.
Candid
Some private schools will not rank their students and I doubt they budge for colleges that demand it. I'd stick with NA.
