Study Island History nightmare

My kids are in 3rd grade and 5th grade study island and history is a nightmare. I really don;t want to have to use a textbook for them to get the information to be able to do well on those stupid questions. What do you all recommend? Although I may not have a choice. Any living books we can read out loud for those questions? Videos? Splash Publications? Elemental History?

and it is important that they do well. They are my stepdaughters and we will always have the threat of their bio mom breathing on our necks should she suddenly get her life together. She tends to have this pattern. She will be homeless, and not take her schizophrenia meds or whatever and not see the girls for months and then suddenly meet a new man and things get "better" for her temporarily and suddenly want to see the girls and want them to live with her and want this and that and cause havok in our routine. The courts in California very rarely takes the rights of the bio parents away no matter how destruptive or damaging or they may take it it away from parents who are perfectly good parents and give it to the parent who has more power within state or has more money or whatever. Not the braniest people working in social services apparently.

Anyways, should our circumstances ever change I want them to be prepared and feel confident if they ever have to return back to school.

They won't be tested on history until 8th grade, so just ignore the Study Island history. If you're truly worried, try to hit the high points in the state's content standards for now. They'll be fine. Seriously, do not stress about this.

When I was thinking about taking a break from homeschooling, I spoke with the curriculum director at the school they'd be attending. This school has VERY high test scores. I specifically asked about history and science and she sounded embarrassed and said something like, "The teachers try to make time for it when they can." So, repeating myself here, do not stress. You could pick any decent homeschool curriculum, and your kids would probably be getting more history instruction than if they were in school.
