King Alfred Academy
Can you tell I am planning my TOG? I was wondering what you do with the vocabulary part for your LG/UG students. Do you ignore then as an "activity"? Do you just "make note" of them as they come up in the reading? Do you study them "formally"? I thought about creating a "dictionary" of sorts with them by having him look them up (over a period of two weeks) and write them on a 3x5 index card and then alphabetize them behind the "abc" dividers. That would be copywork and alphabetizing! Then I thought about "quizzing" him orally but informally. What do you think? I am just creating more "work" for him that doesn't need to be done at this level? How do you incorporate the vocabulary? Thanks from a TOG Newbie! Only my oldest does them, and right now she does the LG. I make her up 3x5 cards, then she works on mastering them. When she feels she has one down she brings it to me for a test. If she gets it right I mark it completed. Heather
Trivium Academy
Dd8 and I have an agreement to stop reading and discuss any words that she doesn't understand the meaning of, this has worked wonderfully. I also speak with a higher vocabulary which helps tremendously. I haven't worried about the vocabulary, I review the words myself at the beginning of the week but haven't felt the need to 'define' words just yet. BTW, we're using most the LG path so that may make a difference to you. :)
Karenciavo
The purpose of the vocabulary is for reading comprehension, that's why you'll find words like territory, frontier, and expansion for the week students study Lewis and Clark. Basically how Jessica uses it is how it was designed to be implemented according to Marcia; caveat: this was pre-Redesign, but I think it still holds. In any case, that's how we do it and I think however you make it work in your homeschool is fine. :)
johnandtinagilbert
LG (going into 1st) will simply copy the list for copywork onto 3X5 card. We'll look through them daily, like flashcards, just hoping he'll pick up some sight words. I'll tell him what the words mean as we flip each card. This year, he just copied the words and on his lead, drew a picture or two...only if he wanted... LG (going into 3rd), UG, D, all sit together at the table. I assign them a word, they look it up, we discuss the definitions, choose (with my leading) which one is appropriate for our study, I write it on the board, they copy it down. Each child is dismissed at the end of their list At the end of the week, I use this as the Spelling and Vocab for the week by testing them. I say the definition, they have to remember the word (the vocab portion) and spell it correctly (the spelling portion) They have to make an A or they retake. I also give them 10 min. per day in their schedule to study their words.
King Alfred Academy
So, the list is there for *me* to make sure I understand the word so when we come to it in our reading and ds has a question, I will be able to give him the correct definition? Am I on the right track? I really don't want to add any work that is not necessary. At least at this stage.
King Alfred Academy
At the end of the week, I use this as the Spelling and Vocab for the week by testing them. I will keep this in mind if I choose to use the vocab. more formally!

Confuzzled
I don't do anything with them for my LG daughter. I do read over them myself while I'm preparing and I stop and explain any words my dd doesn't understand while I'm reading to her.
King Alfred Academy
Thanks Jessica! I tried to rep you but I must spread the love! This sounds like the way to use it with this stage.
