TOG Newbie here. I am doing Y2 Redesign next year and only doing U1 & 2. I am planning to schedule each week over two weeks. I will also only be scheduling 4 days of the five. Those of you who do this, what does your schedule look like for each week? Do you add more of the Alternative/Extra resources in? Do you do more activities? Do you just do the primary resources at a slower pace?

How does it work in your family?

(I have a LG and a LG/UG student if that makes a difference)

Thanks for your help!

Well I am not sure I am going to be able to help, but I can explain what I do. I don't purposly stretch each week over 2 weeks, but often my kids need more time to cover the material than a week, especially because we also do a 4 day week.

OK let me back up first. When I choose books I do it based on what content I want to cover, not how much time I want to spend. So I always look at the in depth books, based on their content I decide whether or not to order them. Once I have the books in hand I start my scheduling. If I only have 4 days of reading, then we only spend 4 days reading. If I have 3 weeks (India recently), then we spend 3 weeks...and everywhere in between. Once I have the books in hand I will make the decision, with the in depth books, if I want my oldest to read it independently or if it something I feel we all need to cover (read it aloud to all). Just this week James Audubon was covered in the in depth section, and I thought it was not to miss for us, so I read it aloud, but the week before the Cherokee Indians were the topic and the Iroquois Indians were listed as in depth. We have covered the Iroquois a little before, so I only had my oldest read it independently.

If you want to see a sample of the schedule I make up, then feel free to e-mail me. Or if you are on the TOG-WTM group it is in the files.

Blessings,

Heather

Here is my 6 day schedule. There will clearly be some things here that wouldn't be appropriate for your dc, as some of mine are dialectic, but with a change to read aloud, and adding an age appropriate activity, it wouldn't be hard at all to use up 8 days. I also use SOTW and MOH for activities for LG. Things like the narration leading ?? and coloring pages. If you'd like a cross reference list for Y2, (TOG, SOTW, MOH) I have one compiled, I'd be happy to share. I also have what I do each day to prepare. I can email that to you if you'd like to see it.

As for resources, we always do the literature and a read aloud (I like chapter books for all, and do a few extra books (using Ambleside or Homeschool Share lists) for LG). I generally choose one textbook (SOTW for LG, Streams of Civ. for D, both for UG), 1 history in depth and if I think they'll enjoy the topic, 1 supplement. I read aloud to LG and assign AR (assigned reading) to the others. I give them a copy of the reading assignments page, highlight what they are to read and let them loose. We also use the CHurch history, although cautiously, because there are some doctrinal differences in our family, so I only let the Dialectics read the history stuff, the LG and UG stick to bible stories and Christian biographies.

I hope this isn't too much information....do allow yourself some time to settle in to TOG. After a month or two, I was feelin' fine, I hope you have smooth sailing.

I am a member of that group. I will check it out!

I like how you are not "bound" to a weekly schedule. It allows time for you to go deeper if you want on a subject of interest. I am looking at using my week 2 for this sort of thing. Unfortunately I am finding that I *need* a schedule to follow.

Thanks for posting your schedule! I am a visual person and it really helps me to see it in "chart" form like this. I am also planning to include SOTW...love this resource and can not "get away"! I am thinking about having them listen to the cds (already own them) during the second week.

Looks like you have your hands full but organized!

We purposely did one 1 week of TOG Y3 over 2 weeks (actually 8 school days) because there was so much fun stuff to do. We listened to SOTW on Audio 4 for an overview this summer, and we will start with the re-designed Y.1 in the Fall (well, Aug. actually). I plan on taking the same approach this year with Year 1. I have a D,UG and LG.

On Friday (of previous week) or over the Weekend ( only 2 x a month) I:

Read General Information, objectives, and writing assignments

I assign books and I put an (M) on any book I plan on reading aloud on the book list page (I am a non-page protector gal, and I DO write in my TOG) I schedule the hands- on, field trips and I write out a supplies page (post it note).

Mondays (week 1)

Geography- Go over area we are studying, do a transparency map, salt map or cookie dough map. Talk about the climate, flora fauna etc. Do a notebook page for Geography.

Tuesdays

Vocabulary done "orally" ( we use Wordly Wise for formal Vocab.)

Read Aloud

Go over writing Project

Wednesdays

Prewriting

Time-line work- (We do Veritas Press Cards on the wall- I put up a long string and I paperclip the card)We sing the song on the Veritas CD.

Thursday

Read-Alouds

Coloring page or Notebook Page on Read Aloud(LG/UG)

Notebook Page (D) on Read Aloud

Start a "Project" (whatever hands-on I scheduled)

Rough Draft

Friday OFF (Can work on project if they wish) My Errand Day!Check my Supplies List to see if I need anything for school next week or take a field trip.

Monday (week 2)

Discuss what we learned last week. I love using the Evaluations for "oral" discussions, I do not give tests;)Looks like we will do 1/2 of the Evaluations page.

Start polishing Writing Assignment for Final Copy

Work on any painting left need for Geography if we did a salt map, quick overview of land area.

Cook something from that area or have it premade for snack

Tuesday

Finish up any left over Read-Alouds. Tell the kiddos they MUST finish History readings for Thursday.

Pass in Final writing Assignment

If time allows work on hands-on project or reading

Wednesday

Time line work- (We do Veritas Press Cards on the wall- I put up a long string and I paperclip the card)We sing the song on the Veritas CD.

Finish up any Project's do SAP's

Thursday

Finish up 2nd 1/2 of Evaluations page, make a notebook page and illustrate on something they did not know before we started.

In the afternoon I file ALL notebook pages,SAP's, and Geography stuff. This way their folders are clean for Monday's.

Friday OFF (Plan for following 2 weeks) or take a field trip.

I want to add that the writing I mention is for TOG (topic) only. They are also working on something from Science/Poetry as part of their LA.

Thank you so much for posting this! It is very helpful.

I was thinking about adding in the VP songs and I like your idea of the VP timeline on your wall. My boys are visual.

I also really like your idea of using the eval. for oral discussions. I am not planning to test, but I would like to have some sort of indication that they are "getting" it.

Anyone else?
