Your top to-see list in NYC?

Recommended Posts

Next month the kids and I, ages 4 and 8, have the opportunity to spend 3 days in NYC. I'll also have my 80 year old granny with us.

So: 3 days, low-budget (we're staying with a family member just outside of the city and taking the train in each morning.) I've only been to NY once myself so I'm not super familiar with the city, but I do feel reasonably comfortable navigating the subway system. I don't want to try to do too much because I know that Granny and the kids just won't have the endurance to do too much. We'll be moving at a sloooow pace. Going to an art museum (The Met?) is absolutely top of our list. Tentatively I've thought:

Day one: museum

Day two: Times Square touristy stuff, ride Staten Island Ferry

Day three: Central Park, Billy Johnson Park

But then I also thought that maybe we should also go to Ground Zero or any other numerous places. How much is reasonable to expect to do in one day keeping in mind I'll have an elderly person and two small children by myself? What would be your itinerary?

Central Park Zoo

Museum of Natural History

I would take the bus instead of the subway. No stairs for grandmother to go up and down (personally I hate the subway-dirty and smelly)

*** You don't have to pay the listed price at the museums. Its a "suggested" donation. Don't let them intimidate you, pay whatever you are comfortable paying.

Ha! See, for some reason, whenever I visit larger cities I'm pretty comfortable getting a subway map and navigating, but I'm TOTALLY intimidated by the buses and can never figure them out at all.

And yes, I was aware that some of the museums have "suggested donations" and was already planning on paying what we can afford.

I'd stick to areas and minimize the travel time.

Day 1: Museum of Nat'l History and picnic in Central Park, perhaps split the party up and let youngest and oldest rest while 8 yr old and yourself walk down 5th Avenue?

Day 2: Empire State Building, Times Square, Sony Wonder, Art Museum

Day 3: Intrepid, show matinee,Staten Island Ferry, WTC Memorial

Thank you! That's helpful. I'm not familiar enough with the city to know where things are located, what places are near to each other, etc. Maybe I need to actually consult a map, LOL?

When we had 3 days in NY, we did:

1. Empire State Building, Times Square, ended up going into Discovery Center to see Titanic exhibit (there's always something interesting there).

2. Ellis Island, Statue of Liberty (which includes ferry ride - why go to Staten Island?) This was an awesome day and one that I absolutely would not miss - not sure why it isn't on anyone else's list.

3. Museum of Natural History, Central Park

The Staten Island ferry is free. So if you want to see the Statue of Liberty but don't want to actually go and visit it, the ferry is a cheap way to do that.

I agree that Ellis Island and the Statue of Liberty make for a great day, but there's so much to do and see in NYC that there's no way to accomplish it all in three days.
