MRI news on dd10 and question for MRI parents

Recommended Posts

Dd's MRI is scheduled for Wednesday afternoon. That's soon enough to make both dh and I happy. It makes dd happy because she can start school today.

She is having both an MRI and an MRA. They told me that the A stands for angio. Does anyone know anything about it?

She gets to bring her IPod or choose music or a movie there to keep her happy. The scan is an hour. She's happy with that and said that she won't need sedation. She is not claustrophobic.

Now an embarrassing question that the scheduler couldn't answer - she said that I can be with her but can't wear metal. Does that mean that I can't wear a bra with an underwire?

I had an MRI and was in the room for my son's MRI. Both times our medic alert bracelets were fine. When i had the mri on my foot, she checked and i had to have my arm near the magnet before it started pulling. Unless you were going in the machine, i cant imagine it would be a problem. If you have a sports bra without underwire, wear it (if it would make you more comfortable).

When they offer you ear plugs, TAKE THEM! Lol. It is crazy loud.

I was just in the room while my daughter had her MRI and I was totally fine with my underwire bra. I asked them and they said it was no big deal.

Bring a book and headsets if you have to listen to something. I had earplugs in (the ones they gave me) but I still had to hear that machine banging away. My daughter on the other hand was listening to music and heard nothing.

There are different levels and types of MRIs. Open MRIs look like a giant disc with a table under it. A closed MRI will look like a small tunnel. Some machines have stronger magnets for more detail. (I had a questionable one once, and had to go to a different facility with a better machine.) I have never been allowed to have have a video or music during a head MRI, so I'm not sure what type she will be having.

Did they tell you if she will have it with or without contrast? If it is with contrast, or both, they will put an IV in and use a dye about halfway through the procedure. It makes you feel really warm, but it doesn't burn, or make you feel sick.

Is your SIL an ophthalmologist, or an optometrist? If she is an MD, she can probably call and get the results about an hour later, so you don't have to worry!

:grouphug:I hope everything is great! My oldest son had several sedated MRIs and waiting for the results is the hardest part!

An underwire is ok but not preferable. If your wedding rings can come off, they will ask for them. They are mostly concerned about keys, coins, etc. on visitors--things that will fly towards the machine when the magnet is on.

We chose to always dress our dd in non-metal clothes....knit t-shirt and skirt so that she didn't need to change for scans but they had easy access to her body if they needed it. (She was always sedated so she had leads all over her body.)

Ask if they have the movie goggles. They can really blast the music, but it's easier to be completely still for a movie, imo...especially if they need more imaging and it goes over an hour. The movie goggles can be used for brain MRIs....but not every hospital has them.

Thank you so much. She wants to do the movie. This is the big city Children's hospital so I'm sure they have the movie goggles. They told us that we should have results the same day. Any further treatment/work up etc. of course will depend on what they find, if anything. We're praying that we were anxious about all of this for nothing.

I was asked to remove my watch and my purse w/phone was kept outside of the room. And, yes the machine is very very loud. My ds was glad to watch a movie. He had to have barium prior to the procedure - that was quite a chore and was the hardest part of the entire procedure.

Make sure your dd doesn't wear any zippers. We had to exchange jean shorts to very large hospital pants.

For my dd's last 2 MRIs done at teh children's hospital, they made her change into hospital pajamas or kid sized scrubs. Every child that had an MRI was treated the same.

I would also wonder about the hooks on your bra. I wasn't allowed to wear a bra at all.

ETA: maybe that's because it was done on me? I don't know.

I am glad you don't have a long wait.

Believe me, we would have gone to battle again if they had given us a long wait. We're not combative people but when you know there is some bleeding in her head and don't know if there is more dangerous bleeding going on, and she's having headaches that knock her out you don't mess with our baby!

She's having headaches that KNOCK HER OUT? Jean! i'm SO sorry to hear this! I have COMPLETELY missed this. I can't imagine.

I feel awful for you all. I would be terrified. I hope and pray that there is no other tumor or bleeding in her brain.

Well, let me back track a bit. She got her last headache on Saturday morning. Her supervisor at the Y said that it was triggered by a very bad poopy diaper on one of the toddlers. She said that she was concerned because dd was sitting on the mat staring out in space and not interacting with the toddlers for about 10 min. (extremely unusual). When the supervisor asked what was wrong, dd burst into tears and said that she had a headache. She came running out to where I was. She was responsive. We got home, got her water with electrolytes (in case it is dehydration related), got her a pain reliever. She was curled up in the fetal position on the floor and fell asleep there for an hour. So - in that sense it knocked her out. But - after an hour she felt fine and was fine for the rest of the day. She will sometimes have headaches like this for a couple of days in a row. Sometimes only once every two months. I hadn't taken her into the doctor for them yet because they always respond to pain reliever and don't last that long. But when she gets them she isn't able to go about her activities and I think they are fairly frequent as headaches go. But headaches are a totally new territory in the health arena for me.

I just had an MRI and I couldn't wear my bra with an underwire. But, I would never have an MRI without sedation. Both my son's have had one and had to be pulled out of the tube and sedated because they didn't do very well. Just our experience. I would keep options open

Good to know. The person I talked to said that this facility (which is ped's only) is very flexible in allowing for you to change your mind about sedation.:001_smile:

Perhaps related to what is going on with the hemorrhaging?

Is it an open MRI? There is also considerable noise inside but if she is allowed to wear headphones she can tune that out.

The hemorrhaging that we know about is from the growth in her eye. According to the doctor it should not cause headaches. If she has other growths in her brain, that could cause headaches but of course the headaches could be totally separate.

She will be watching a movie so must have some kind of headphones or something, I would think, so she can hear it.

I never put dd12 on medication because I know what her triggers are and Advil works. Smells are obviously a trigger for your dd, but dehydration coukd also be. My dd's triggers are fairly common - flourescent lights, loud sounds, dehydration, waiting too long to eat, sleep deprivation. You may want to consider a headache journal u til you knw what your dd's triggers are. Smells are one. See if any types of foods are triggers. Also, I have a rice cozy I keep in the freezer fir migraines for dd and I. If they start in our neck or shoukders, I micriwave it and appky heat. Sometimes I pack my entire head in ice, sometimes dd does, also, there are gel masks you can keep in the refrigerator.

If you have not seen a specialist (I didn't find them helpful unless dd were bad enough to be put on preventative meds), be prepared to be told your dd's headaches/migraines will get worse with puberty. This is why I am so glad we homeschool. My dd has a pineal cyst which makes her more prone to migraines. I highly suspect your dd's headaches are linked to her condition.

Sorry for all my rambling but I hope some of it helped.

Now to finish reading to see if you've posted an update.

Ok..... So your response confused me until I realized it is only Tuesday today. :blushing: pls update about her MRI. FYI - my dd did fine with multiple MRI's but I was fully prepared to sedate, as was she.

The MRI/MRA is tomorrow from 2:30 - 4 pm. They said that they are able to sedate at the last minute if needed.
