Kfamily Posted July 15, 2008 Posted July 15, 2008 We are finishing Writing Tales 2 this year with dd for 6th. I know she is a little above the age range but I do want to finish it. I expect to work harder this year and finish about Jan. of 09. I am adding a more serious effort in grammar this year (although I am concerned about it too) and we will be doing Henle Latin and still working in First Start French. I am also planning on writing across the curriculum more this year. Does anyone have any goals I could add to Writing Tales 2 to stretch this for us? I thought I had read it won't be out until 2010. Is this still true? I don't think I could stretch that much. I don't want to get behind with dd. Would Classical Writing Homer be my best choice. I've read that is where we should go next and I know there is a grammar program we could go with that would be more supportive than the one I have for this year. I am wondering if I should just go for CW Homer and start the grammar program now. I could wrap up WT2 and move right into Homer. Would Homer allow me to help dd write across the curriculum? I could make the little bit of IEW knowledge I have work...but I really want to get this right and I think I need a great plan that is highly organized to do this. Any Advice?? Thank you! Quote
PeterPan Posted July 15, 2008 Posted July 15, 2008 The 2nd half of WT2 is really good, so definitely keep going!! The sentence beginnings and things you're going to cover are comparable to IEW SWI B, and IEW is where I'd suggest you go next. Actually what I did is create a series of checklists and chose my own models to carry over our skills from WT2 into non-fiction (paragraph and essay) writing. You could stretch WT2 out by alternating WT2 models with non-fiction assignments, but I think it would be easier to just go ahead and FINISH wt2, then start applying it to non-fiction assignments. Kfamily Posted July 15, 2008 Author Posted July 15, 2008 I will be using George Washington's World, Our Island Story and This Country of Ours for history (mid 1600's-1800's). I think TCOO has chapters which are too long but GWW might work. What do you think? So we could finish WT2 and then apply this to nonfiction writing. (summarys for history and maybe science)? Can I really do this well? :001_smile: Thanks for your advice and encouragement. Quote
TracyR Posted July 15, 2008 Posted July 15, 2008 That sounds like a good idea. At this point I'm not sure if Writing Tales 3 will be out. I know ,Amy, wasn't sure due to life issues if she was going to continue on with the series or not. I'm hoping though that she will be able to. I know I'm stretching out WT1 right now so that hopefully just hopefully we can go into WT2 without worrying about not having a WT3. I know Amy does recommend CW Homer. So you could go with that too if you want to continue on. Maybe, Amy, will pop in and share wether Writing Tales will carry on or not. I know I'm crossing my fingers. Quote
Kfamily Posted July 15, 2008 Author Posted July 15, 2008 I will definitely stretch 6th grade (this next year) but after that I will have to go with Homer or something else. It is such a good fit for us-classical writing made easier and user friendly for moms like me!! Quote
Amy from WT Posted July 16, 2008 Posted July 16, 2008 Hi girls, Just wanted to share that yes, WT 3 WILL come to exist - but I can't promise when. Life has been "up in the air" and quite difficult for our family for a long time now. We're still trying to get settled, and until we know whether I will need to go back to work or not, part-time or full-time, I won't know when I will be able to begin WT 3. So YES, it WILL be written (it already exists in the back of my brain!), but I just don't know when I will be allowed the time to sit down and pound it all out. I'm so sorry that I can't be more definite! For now, it is best to make other plans after finishing WT 2. Quote
PeterPan Posted July 16, 2008 Posted July 16, 2008 Well this is just my opinion, but with a 6th grader, I would look for non-fiction models, as in things conducive to writing various types of paragraphs (informative, persuasive, compare and contrast, etc.) and essays, not just retellings. I think you want to get into the paragraph writing so they'll be prepared for academic writing in junior high. It might not be the right time or progression according to the progymnasta, but I think it's high time according to modern education expectations. We EXPECT a 6th or 7th grader to be able to write a solid paragraph on a science topic, a 3 paragraph essay biography, etc. And that's the stuff I'm saying to get into, carrying your WT2 skills right over.
