mlbuchina
As we wait for our appointment for dyslexia testing, we are going ahead with the Barton system. I got Level 1 in the mail, and watched the videos. The whole time I was thinking that it was so easy, and that my dd7 would have no problem with it. In fact, I might just have to send it back and get the next level. Not even close. We sat down to do the first level of the first lesson, and she struggled with breaking apart the cv sounds. She also had a hard time even remembering the nonsense word. We would have to repeat the procedure several times on the same word. I feel like such a failure. How could I have let this get this bad?? I knew something wasn't quite right, and I did ask and look for guidance. I was told many times that she just needed a little maturity on her, and she would be fine. NOT. I am hopeful that it will get better. I am hopeful that she will start being able to hear the sounds and we will start making progress. I am hoping that she just needs practice with the new way of doing things. Thanks for letting me talk. Now I need to get it together, and get ready for the work. simplyme99
:grouphug: Don't blame yourself ... just work from where she is today. I struggled with the guilt too because I knew my DD had issues, but didn't have her tested for two years. When I finally got a diagnoses of dyslexia I too was mad at myself for not "knowing" - but you just have to move forward, can't go back. Mukmuk
:grouphug: Yes, don't be so hard on yourself. Even after I discovered my son had CAPD and VPD, it took me a long to understand what the implications are and why the way he dealt with the world was so different. What's really important is that you've gone through the trouble to understand and to help. Baby steps from here on. Things will improve! :)
IsabelC
:iagree: with the PPs. It's worrying and frustrating to see your child struggle, but be gentle on yourself, you're doing a wonderful job.

Lecka
It is pretty scary when a child can't do Barton Level 1. My son struggled with that level of phonemic awareness for months. But since he has gotten the hang of it, he has made good progress. For him at least -- everything is not the same level of struggle he had at the beginning. Even when you are repeating something over and over -- your dd is learning. Just b/c she is not learning from one time or one day, doesn't mean that she is not learning. This is a really, really hard skill for her -- even though it is supposed to be pre-school level. This may be one of the hardest things she ever does. I hope you can start to see some progress soon! It is hard to keep working and stay positive while there is not really progress.... but when progress started here, it was a lot easier to keep going. edit: the very first step of breaking apart VC was very, very hard for my son. Then he had a big breakthrough and was able to segment and blend CVC words. Then when it was time for CVCC and then CCVC -- that was extremely hard again. Since then, nothing has been as difficult as those things were (he is at a 2nd-grade reading level now). It was also difficult for him when we got to one phonogram making more than one sound -- he really needed to just learn one sound at a time (like ow in cow or row). But with doing that in a slow and stair-stepped way, it was not a problem compared to the first step of segmenting a VC word. And adding an e to the end of a word (CVCE -- e makes the vowel have a long sound) was not hard for him at all! He still seemed to take longer than an "average" child going through the program we used for that (we went to Abecedarian for some reasons that made me think it was a good fit for my son) but it was nothing compared to learning to segment and blend (he learned to segment before he learned to blend -- segmenting was the first crack in the door for him). mlbuchina
Thank you so much for the encouragement. I know we are at the beginning of a journey, and if I think about it too much, I feel like I should have started earlier. Thank you!
Tasia
My son is a year older than your daughter, and we're at the beginning of this journey as well. We started with Barton in July and it was slow going at first, but my son is able to put longer sessions in now and we're moving a little more quickly. You're doing great. :grouphug:
