Mynyel
I am looking at a pattern for Tunisian Crochet. The gauge is for 29 sts across and 26 rows with a 5mm hook and Medium (4) yarn. It is supposed to equal 4 inches. :001_huh: Now I am using a 5.5mm however I don't think that doubles the 4" for the gauge. The pattern itself is supposed to be 47 sts across and only be 6.5 inches wide. I just can't get that. Even if I use a much smaller hook. I think I can get that gauge with embroidery thread but not any yarn! Can anyone get that kind of gauge even with regular crochet? So am I wrong or is the gauge off and I should alter the pattern? Cinder
Isn't Tunisian crochet supposed to look like knitting? I'm not familiar with the technique. Anyway the gauge is about 7 sts/in. I usually get that with sport weight on US2 which is 2.75mm. Is this an indie designer's pattern or a big yarn company or designer pattern? A lot of indie patterns have a gauge based on the designer's gauge, so sometimes it's tight and sometimes loose. I recently knit a pair of fingerless mitts. As I was looking at patterns I noticed one pattern used dk yarn over US2 and another used DK yarn over US6--same gauge! Well on the US2 pattern the designer stated she was a loose knitter. Should you modify? Depends on what you're making. If it's a garment then you might want to make changes or choose a different yarn so the item fits. If it's a dishcloth or scarf then you might be able to leave it if you think you will like the end product.
Mynyel
Isn't Tunisian crochet supposed to look like knitting? Yes! :) I'm not familiar with the technique. Anyway the gauge is about 7 sts/in. To me 7 sts an inch is a very tight weave. If I tried to get 7 sts an inch it would be as tight as knots. This is just a pattern in a book for something similar to Tunisian crochet. Should you modify? Depends on what you're making. If it's a dishcloth or scarf then you might be able to leave it if you think you will like the end product. I still don't see how if the gauge is 29 sts it equals 4 inches unless it is a really, really tight weave. Medium 4 yarn isn't real thin... maybe I am just not doing it right. Grrr. I wish they would have a picture of the gauge so I can see how tight the weave is! :)
