eloquacious
There is a whole treasure trove of old books written in "words of one syllable" on Google Books. A search will yield Bible books, Story Books, Histories, Aesop's Fables, etc. They say that they are written with the intent of serving younger readers: in essence, they were the 19th's century's version of the "I Can Read" series. ;)

serendipitous journey
Hunter, thanks for the quick'n easy link! These are scheduled in Milestones Academy's lists (this is a Charlotte Mason site & curriculum), so I'd heard of them but haven't seen any reviews -- anybody used one? Momof3littles
Thank you! I found a few on the Project Gutenberg site that I'll be able to put on my Nook. They have the one syllable books for Swiss Family Robinson, Robinson Crusoe, The Pilgrim's Progress, and Alice in Wonderland, Lives of the Presidents, and George Washington. eta: Using google, UNC has a few in epub and other formats, including History of the US and Grimm's.
