Hewitt's Conceptual Physics and his Problem Solving book

Recommended Posts

Has anybody used this combo? I'm using the college version of Hewitt's Conceptual Physics with our 10th-grader and 7th-grader. I like this arrangement very much. I can teach them at the same time, they retain much more when they bounce off their ideas between them, and I can just add a math component for the 10th-grader to beef it up. We've dabbled into Hewitt's "Problem Solving in Conceptual Physics" for math, but I'm wondering if it would be solid enough as a prep for SAT Physics Subject Test. When I briefly compared it with Barron's prep book, it looked like it covers most, if not all, of everything Barron's does. Was my estimate too far off? I'd like to hear from moms who used both Conceptual Physics and the Problem Solving book, specifically if they think the latter is enough for SAT Subject test, and about how they coordinated the textbook reading and problem crunching. Could anybody help me? Thanks!

You're using the college version? For a 7th grader? How much math has the 7th grader had? I am assuming the college version has more math the the high school....I'm using the high school version, my son did very well in algebra last year. I don't think he'd be doing well with more math than this has though... not the way his brain works.

With the high school version, I'm using the Concept Development Practice Book, and like it. I do think I may end up buying the Problem Solving Workbook, though. There just isn't enough math practice in the book, imho.

The 7-th grader is finishing Singapore 6 and Hands-on Equation. So she's not formally introduced to Algebra, but so far she's doing OK. Again, she is not using the Problem Solving book. That's only for her sister, who is in 10th grade. Judging from the number of responses, I guess this combo isn't popular here. So I'll just stick with it and set aside plenty of time for the Barron's book later, just in case it's not quite enough. Thanks,
