Sharilynn29
My son is filling out his first job application. He has never had a job or been in public school. One of the questions is, "Please list awards or leadership positions (work or school.)" How would you answer that? We are not involved in a co-op. He has been involved with church, but they aren't asking about that. Best homeschooled ever! Cutest son ever! Hard worker award! Most responsible of my 2 kids award! Seriously, how does he answer? I don't think he should leave it blank.
Marylou
Could you give him a "Perfect attendance award"? That might look good to an employer! Does the application ask for his school? If not, don't ask/don't tell!

Jenny in Florida
If he hasn't had any awards or leadership positions, why wouldn't he leave it blank? I don't think you should make up an imaginary award. However, I have to ask, has he ever been in any contests? Has he ever led anything at church? I agree with Beth and Jean. I wouldn't be dishonest and make up anything, but I suspect he might have something to write there is you think about it carefully. Does he participate in a church youth group? If so, has he ever participated in leading an activity or project? What kinds of extracurriculars does he do? Is there anything related to any of those that might work? My daughter established and edited a newsletter for the homeschool group we were members of at the time. "Newsletter Editor" went on her transcripts and applications as a leadership position. When our church re-established youth groups after a break of a few years, she was one of the founding members of the new group(s). They elected officers, and, bingo, another leadership position to list. Has he taken and done well on any standardized tests? My son took the National Mythology Exam last year and got a 98%, which earned him a silver medal. I'll bet there's something in his experience you could massage to fit on the form. Sharilynn29
I wasn't planning on making anything up. My concern is that they specifically said work or school. He has held a leadership position in church, but they didn't specify that. He took a standardized test and did great, but no award. He plays sports, but again no leadership position. If he was in public school, he'd be on the honor roll every time. He's super smart and reliable. He just hasn't had a chance outside of home and church to show it. MollyAnn
I would look at the 'work or school' as a suggestion and then put down the position at church.
Sharilynn29
He's had a lead role in numerous community (i.e. church) performances. He's taken a leadership position in community outreach programs (VBS, AWANA). I still don't know if this is what they want since it is not directly related to work or school. Yeah, I think you're right here. I was hung up on that. Thanks for the help! I love the hive!

What they are really looking for is information on whether he has leadership skills and any special talents or abilities. They mention school and work because those are the only two arenas that they thought of.
