JudoMom Posted July 15, 2008 Posted July 15, 2008 They told us what we already knew. Ds8 is, indeed, very logical and math minded and he doesn't listen :smilielol5:. Anyway, the thought of these tests have given me stomach aches over the past 4 years. I was afraid he would bomb and dh would rethink homeschooling (even though he assured me he wouldn't, I was still afraid). But ds did very well, dh is pleased, and I'm relieved it's over (and it's nice to have some confirmation I'm not failing him). However, next time ds8 says he's bad at math I might smack him upside the head ;). Quote

A.J. at J.A. Posted July 15, 2008 Posted July 15, 2008 We should be getting DSs 3rd grade Standardized Achievement Test results any day now and I'm on pins and needles for exactly the reasons you mentioned. I know it is ridiculous but I've even had bad dreams about it (I can't help what I dream, right?) It's been almost 8 weeks now so I'm hoping that I didn't do something wrong and they won't be sending us the test results in the mail...I don't even know who to contact to ask about it. UGH! Glad your son did well! Angela Quote
Michelle in MO Posted July 15, 2008 Posted July 15, 2008 pretty much confirm what I already intuitively *know* as a parent, although sometimes there are some surprises. I don't like testing, and neither do my kids, but I tell them it's just one of those "hoops" that they have to jump through! Quote
klmama Posted July 15, 2008 Posted July 15, 2008 They told us what we already knew. Ds8 is, indeed, very logical and math minded and he doesn't listen :smilielol5:. We're still waiting to get our results back. Did they give you anything specific regarding areas needing improvement, such as "needs to work on decoding skills, particulaly in words with diphthongs," or was the evaluation more general? Was the conclusion that your ds is math-minded based on the math tests themselves or on the cognitive abilities test? I'm on pins and needles here! Thanks for any info you can give on what to expect from the results! Quote
abbeyej Posted July 15, 2008 Posted July 15, 2008 kidlovingmama, Did you give the CogAT this year along with the ITBS? I definitely found it more revealing than the ITBS alone, and going to cogat.com and entering the score profile to get the interpretation back was actually very interesting and helpful. (Of course, lol, ds came back with an "e" profile, which is apparently the least reliable, lol...) So if you did CogAT along with ITBS, it should tell you if your child performed as expected on the skills portion of the test based on his aptitudes, or if some portion was significantly higher or lower. (Ds' report said it was incongruous that his spelling score was so high, but suggested he wasn't performing up to his ability level when it came to capitalization, lol.) If you just gave the ITBS alone, you'll have to do a little more interpretation on your own to figure if there are specific areas you think don't match your child's ability, and how you want to address those. klmama Posted July 15, 2008 Posted July 15, 2008 Thanks, abbeyej. We did give the CogAT. I'm glad to know it wasn't a waste of time! Thanks for the link to their site. It should be helpful! Quote
