funschooler5
My forgetfulness is really wreaking havoc on my life right now. I don't know what's wrong with me. Some examples: Last night I drove to the store to buy a 2-liter of Coke (my only vice. Well, that and chocolate :blushing:). I walk in the store, and right inside the door there's a display of Coke 2 liters on the ground, but I decide to go get a cold one. They are out of cold 2-liters, so I look for the 1.5liters. Out of those too. Frustrated at this point (I'm carrying my now 20lb baby around the store and the whole reason I'm there is because I forgot to buy Coke earlier that day while at a different store) I finally pick up a comparatively expensive 1liter. It's only when I'm walking out the door that I remember the 2liters by the entrance! I just came back from Walmart, where I went specifically to get a greeting card and wrapping paper for a friend's wedding reception. Before I left I realized I needed TP, shampoo, and laundry soap. Knowing me, I jotted those three things down on a scrap of paper. As I pulled into our driveway I realized--you guessed it---I didn't buy the card or wrapping paper! This happens to me several times a day. I need to fetch things for DH (he's chronically ill and sometimes doesn't feel well enough to make it up the stairs). When I go up, I'm invariably accosted by one of the kids for help with schoolwork, a snack, etc. Sometimes I'll forget the thing (or things) I went up for. Sometimes I'll forget to come back down at all! DH gets his feelings hurt by this, but I'm trying to show him that I do this to myself too. What's wrong with me? Is this from having a new baby? Because I don't remember being like this with the first three. Maybe I'm just getting older (I'm 38). This is going to sound like a joke, but I bought some ginkgo biloba three weeks ago, but I keep forgetting to take it!
3browneyedboys4me
Ummm...well, the first thing that comes to my mind is STRESS! You have your hands full sweetie! You said your dh is chronically ill? Wow- that's a lot for you to handle. I am forgetful too. I find that it's always harder with each child b/c there is more to do and less of me to do it. I honestly think that most of this is do to your mind being so busy in other areas that you really can't concentrate on the things that aren't critically important at the moment. Chin up! You are fine and just really busy! This will get easier as your little one gets older!
chickenpatty
Have you had your thyroid checked lately? I have a friend who had hers removed, and it turns out that even though she is on synthroid, there is some other hormone that the thyroid makes and when you're deficient in it, it can really mess up your memory. Might be worth mentioning to your doctor? Although, I must say I'm pretty forgetful too, and have a list with me nearly all the time. Garga
This happened to my husband. It became extremely frightening. He would forget everything. I stopped telling him anything. He'd come home from work, I'd ask about his day and then not bother telling him another thing, because no matter what I told him or when, he never, ever remembered it. It was like talking to a wall. And the bad part is he didn't believe me when I would tell him about it. Or he'd forget that I'd told him. It wasn't until he started forgetting to turn in assignments for his master's degree, something he would NEVER forget in normal circumstances, that he realized he had a problem. Turns out he had sleep apnea. And no, even though I slept next to him, I couldn't diagnose it. After a couple of weeks on a cpap machine, which allowed him to reach all the stages of sleep (which he hadn't been doing for years) his memory is normal now. teamturner
I do this type of thing often as well. Someone recently told me its a symptom of "too busyitis!" Sorry!
pageta
This would be why I write things down. If I don't, I inevitably forget something. The more I write down, the less I have to remember, the less frazzled I am. It's a spiral that only builds on itself, like a snowball. Write it down and you won't have to remember. AK_Mom4
My vote goes for it being stress, too. On the more helpful side, I put my shopping list into the little memo thing on my cell phone. It really does help....
Alyeska
I used to do the SAME thing!!! I also have thyroid trouble. Forgetfulness is one of the first signs that I need my meds adjusted. :grouphug: So my suggestions is to have your blood drawn and have a FULL thyroid panel done...not just the basic test. Edited to add: my thyroid tanked within months of having my dd. My doctor told me that pregnancy is a common catalyst of thyroid problems. Sharon37127
My first thought with your age was low progesterone. I went through this a few years ago. I thought my issue were memory loss until I supplemented with OTC progesterone cream and realized it was more brain fog. I couldn't think straight (and problem solving was getting to be an issue) to realize that was what it was. Just my 2 cents.
fraidycat
I write things down...then promptly forget where I put the paper! Yeah, I forget things, too. It is scary sometimes.
ApronMama
Sounds like stress and life with a baby! :grouphug: I know it's hard but it will get better. In the meantime, write things down, say them aloud to yourself, put whatever you came upstairs for by the stairs before answering the kids. If it's any consolation, some of us were just born that way. No fix for me--poor dh!
funschooler5
Thanks everyone for your suggestions! I've never had my thyroid checked (I actually haven't been to a doctor in several years) so I should probably get that checked just in case. Lack of sleep might be a problem too; I've been getting about 4 hours a night lately, with an hour nap during the day.
Peaceful Isle
I've heard it called "mom brain" :001_smile: I have it too! It comes with lack of sleep, needy kids, stress, and in your case, a husband that has needs as well. I think you are just overloaded! :grouphug: When my dh was going through his tough bouts with Multiple Sclerosis, some days he would stay in bed all day and everything was on my shoulders. I totally had forgetful "mom brain" during those times! Hugs to you! You sound like a very strong woman!
