Hikin' Mama Posted July 15, 2008 Posted July 15, 2008 I am making lesson plans for next year and have several questions about how others have used Jacob's Geometry. 1. The teacher's guide syllabus only lists 24 weeks. Does one add more problems to stretch it out if there are more weeks in the school year? 2. The syllabus lists the problems to have the student do. But (I'm anal, bear with me!) it leaves out all sorts of problems in the book. The teacher's guide says they have "carefully chosen problems that need to be understood." Does that mean that I should be adding more problems to the assignment only if my student needs them? Why are all the problems in there, if I'm not going to use them? :001_huh: 3. I also read once on this board that there are extra proofs available online. At what point does one start adding these in, and how many are sufficient? How do you access these? By the way, we are using the 3rd edition with the Dr. Callahan DVDs. Thank you to anyone who can answer some or all of these questions! Kim Quote
MaryM Posted July 15, 2008 Posted July 15, 2008 Well, this is probably no help but we just did every problem in every chapter as well as the algebra reviews. My thought was that we had the time, the foundation for trig would be very helpful and we actually "enjoyed" this but tremendously so kiddo was eager to do the work. THe first problem sets were done orally, however. Am sure others will offer more creative suggestions! Mary Quote
Moira in MA Posted July 15, 2008 Posted July 15, 2008 Well, this is probably no help but we just did every problem in every chapter as well as the algebra reviews. I'm with you, Mary, I did this with my elder daughter and plan to repeat the exercise with my younger one. It really helped my eldest to think carefully and logically something that my youngest desperately needs to learn. For the second edition, this works out to a 150 day course using the summary and review as chapter tests and having mid-term and final tests. HTH Quote
MyThreeSons Posted July 15, 2008 Posted July 15, 2008 in which he graciously shared the problems he assigns for homework for both a regular College Prep Geometry course and an Honors Level Course. If you PM me with your email address, I'd be glad to forward the file to you. Please note: I'm happy to share with anyone, but you will need to be able to receive an attachment on the email. The list is for 3rd Edition (I'm pretty sure -- it's been a while since I used it.) HTH Quote
dkholland Posted July 16, 2008 Posted July 16, 2008 and have spent time scheduling this too. One more question I have is.... If you have your child do ALL the problems in each chapter...then doesn't that mean he will have already done all the TEST questions? Dr. Callahan's tests that come with the program are taken from each chapter in the book and from the algebra review. Are you using his tests or are you getting other tests from somewhere?? Please let me know how you are handling the tests. Quote
dkholland Posted July 16, 2008 Posted July 16, 2008 Well, this is probably no help but we just did every problem in every chapter as well as the algebra reviews. If you child did all the problems, then what did you use for tests? Dr. Callahan uses problems from each chapter and algebra review for his tests, so if I have my ds do all the problems...then he will have already done his test. Should I just skip tests?? This is my ds's 8th gr. year. Thanks!! Quote
Laura K (NC) Posted July 16, 2008 Posted July 16, 2008 It's here. It accommodates different levels of learners, so that the book can be either a regular or an "honors" course. As for us, I have that syllabus but I'm ignoring it. My son is doing some of the third section problems, but not all. I look at them beforehand and decide whether I think they're peripheral or integral. Unfortunately (I guess) it's a pretty subjective decision. We (both he and I are working through the book) will do all the chapters and not skip over any, except we will not do the algebra review since we (again, this we! :svengo:) will be doing Algebra 2 simultaneously come next month. They have it set up for an Honors track if you wanted that but it is optional. We also did this in 8th. Mary Quote
Hikin' Mama Posted July 16, 2008 Author Posted July 16, 2008 It's so nice to have somewhere to go to try to figure these things out! Quote
