WWS Week 15!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!

Recommended Posts

can I offer some support? We did it last year and there were a couple weeks that were very challenging.

Mostly, our challenge came from DS not really reading the instructions.

THanks. :) Challenging is definitely the word. VERY challenging. He will have taken 3 days to do "Day 4" of Week 15. Really, though, I don't know how many 5th graders could do it in one day--it's a long assignment!

We took 3 days to do the Kepler paper - week 7 I think? It was the first assignment after summer break and vacation, so it was partly just getting back up to speed - but I also keep reminding myself that she's only 9, and it isn't a race - it's way better to spend 3 days and turn out a good assignment with a minimum of tears, rather than "getting it done" on the book's schedule.

This is a challenging curriculum, but well, well worth it! (says the girl whose kid just finished week 9, and hasn't gotten to the "hard stuff" yet!)

Most of those assignments took my son 3 hours to write over 2 days. He was in 6th grade. By doing days 1 and 2 in a single day and using Friday for editing, we were able to pace out the work better than as written.

I also listen to an oral version before sending my son off to write. That way I can identify major difficulties in the planning stage.

We are currently doing the final assignment of WWS1 while concurrently beta testing week 1 of WWS2! This is quite a chunk of time, but we got behind because of the science fair. :tongue_smilie:

We are almost done with WWS1, and I remember several "weeks" in the teens and twenties that took Anna 5-6 days to complete. It was something about the transition to "real" writing or something that was really difficult. I decided I would rather slow it down and let her do it right than try to fit it in to four days. Now we are nearing the end, and she is writing beautifully and loving it.

Hang in there!!

Thanks nakia! We need the encouragement!

I like the idea of listening to an oral version before my son starts writing. That would definitely make the editing less painful for him. This is going to be a stressful year.

I am scared of writing so I am cheating and farmed it off to an IEW class this year. My older DD HATES to write so I think this class may help. Once I see what she can do I am thinking of getting WWS to give her more practice......but maybe not. I see a lot of dents in my head in the future.

Oh No...ds is only on week 1! Is that what we have to look forward to?!!

My thoughts exactly.:tongue_smilie:

Yes, that'll be an issue for us. Skimming the instructions and assuming one understands is rather different than reading and digesting them. Most of us probably face that reality in various facets of life.

I don't know how many 5th graders could do it in one day--it's a long assignment!

I wouldn't even use this program with a 5th grader, much less expect him to complete the more challenging writing assignments in a day.

I decided I would rather slow it down and let her do it right than try to fit it in to four days.

Smart!

I like that idea, but in reality I think it'd make things more stressful for us. Luke wouldn't want to read a draft aloud ~ not to his hyper-critical mother, anyway.;)

We are starting Monday. I have everything all prepared. My knees are shaking.

He did it!!!!!!!!!!! It's done! Woot! By far, his hardest assignment yet. I am so proud of him!!!!

Week 15 is a walk in the park compared to week 31, which we are doing now. Just sayin'. On the bright side, we're looking at the French Revolution in history, so the biographical sketch of Marie Antoinette fit right in! Although ds didn't think it was such a bright side... :)

My dd is on week 17 and the character sketch was by far the hardest assignment. She did her brother and she had to do it over twice. But I love the rubrics that the instructor's guide has. This must be the difference between a boy and a girl. My dd has not complained about any WWS assignment, but my ds would have complained for sure.
