ProudGrandma
Called a grocery store chain asking for them to bring in a certain food or brand of food, or more variety and it actually hapened? If so, who did you talk to and what did you say? We are on the Feingold diet and only certain brands of foods are accepted and I need more of certain brands or foods. But I don't have time to waste calling grocery stores if they won't listen anyway. thanks.
nukeswife
I've only had luck with that if it was a brand they already carried but maybe not a specific variety of that brand. I'm also required to then buy the whole box that comes in. At my local store I talk to the grocery manager about it, and this was for a yogurt item. They carry the brand I want but not the flavor I want, as long as I'll buy the whole box of 12 when they come in, they'll gladly order it for me. The other is a bit different in that it was the Navy Commissary, and it was back when I was using baby formula and food, they seemed to always be low on the type I wanted so I asked them to order extra cases just for me, as long as I could give them the UPC they were happy to do it. Jann in TX
The manager happened have young children of his own-- he looked it up and it was in stock the next week (he even called me when it came in). I have also asked for specific flavors of tea (the drink :tongue_smilie: ) since the brand was carried by the store they had no issues with ordering it for me. Joshin
I have done it successfully at Safeway on two items I could not find at any groceries in my area. One was a tea and the other was a brand of hot salsa. All the stores only carry medium, I guess because I live a long way from the Southwest now! They agreed to order one case of each and if they sold would continue to order it. They now carry four different brands of hot salsa, so I guess a lot of people were wanting it but no one else knew to ask. My mom did the same thing at Fred Meyers requesting Jiffy Pie Crust mix. They now carry it, but only around the holidays so she stocks up. We both just spoke with the manage while in the store. At Safeway, they had a list they kept of customer requests. I'm not sure about Fred Meyers.
Dory
I talked to the manager a few times at a grocery store and asked them to bring something specific in. They were able to on a few of them, and on a couple others they just weren't able to get them in.
Lara in Colo
I have done this several times. Most of the products I liked they ended up putting on their shelves later, but for me, the first time, I had to buy the entire case, box, whatever. Rebecca VA
The few times I've done this -- at a tiny mom and pop store and at the Navy Commissary in Guam -- the store managers were happy to oblige. I think they really want to please their customers. Now, a big chain store might not be able to help you, because their ordering might be based on what the chain management dictates. But it doesn't hurt to ask.

Tess in the Burbs
I always went to customer service. if it's health food you want and they have a heath food section manager that is the person to order. I have asked lots of times at places but a lot of times it's about shelf space AND if they already get deliveries from that company. If they don't it's hard to get them in....apparently these people go to the stores so it could be no rep in the area, etc. But then it's shelf space. A store recently downgraded their health section, moved the gluten free to the baking aisle  and added more brands. Which is fine but they took away the brands/products I bought regularly. Like they were always out of stock. How does that make sense? And while the brand they brought in is fine they don't carry any of the product i wanted. It's all cookies for $10 a package! good luck, keep requesting. Perhaps contacting the brands you want to see and suggesting they talk to your store.... Woodland Mist Academy
I have done this several times in a chain grocery store. Most of the time the store started carrying the item. Other times I was told I could order the item in bulk for myself. There have only been one or two times the store couldn't get the item. I talk to the person in charge of ordering for that department. I would recommend going in person rather than asking over the phone. besroma
I have been able to order cases of items that health food stores do not usually stock.
Debbi in Texas
I am a department manager in a small grocery store-mom and pop. We special order things for people all the time and rarely does anyone buy the whole case. My suggestion is to ask to speak to the person who orders for that particular department and make your request to that person.(yogurt-dairy manager, canned goods-grocery manager,a variety of apple-produce manager). Just asking a store manager is iffy-they are usually so busy they forget to relay the info. It is extremely helpful if you can bring them an empty container of the item,so they have the bar code. Order guides are not easy reading and we don't have a lot of time to peruse them.
Soror
I have and so has a friend of mine. I talked to the individual managers for each department. If they could order it then they did. I've always done that in person though and I generally am in there a lot. I always thought it would be more credible to do it in person rather than randomly calling. Dobela
We have 3 Krogers in our town and each one carries different items for different target groups. If the one nearest to me doesn't have what I want, but the one across town does, my manager will order the item just for me. I have not had to buy a full case unless I wanted to. They also have a specialty order program online where I can order items that don't need refrigeration and have them delivered to my door. If you know other people interested in the same items, have them start requesting as well. The more people want it, the more likely they will order it. I have also found that the locally owned health food store is willing to order for me anything I want. It may cost a bit more, but they are willing to put what I don't want on the shelves. If it is popular enough they will carry it regularly.
