I only have 2 students, but we only use 1 copy. They crowd around me on the couch to listen to the next chapter. It's not consumable, so unless you want them to read them at the same time, and do their work independently, I can't imagine needing more than one copy. There are usually only 5 questions max for them to work on at the end of each chapter. Each of them have a math composition book to work on their problems on their own.

I have just one copy for two kids. It's not a workbook. Each of my kids have a composition book to do the problems in. They write chapter 1 in the margin, I read the chapter, then they answer the few problems in their notebook. I wouldn't spend that much money if you can just read it aloud or if done independently, do it at different times so they read from the same book, while keeping their own notebook.

I read the aloud to all my children so only need 1 book. Since it is only for my ds6 technically, he just answers the questions outloud and I shush the older one. You could have your dc write their answers on paper after the read aloud. They do all need to be able to see the book while you're reading, but we manage that with 3-4 sitting on the couch.
