Momof2littles
Can you suggest a non-schoolish feeling curriculum that is planned for me! ETA for 1st grade specifically! Edited September 2, 2012 by Momof2littles
Lang Syne Boardie
Could you be a little more specific? :001_smile:
Tanikit
What do you mean by non schoolish - hands on?, not textbooks? minimal writing or worksheets? involving less reading or more reading? computer based or not at all?
Momof2littles
Could you be a little more specific? :001_smile: Haha! I want something Christian and fun! I don't want to do hours of planning...I like a schedule that says do this on this day but isn't too bossy and can be tweaked if needed! I taught PS and don't want my home to feel like school! I just want suggestions! I'm loving sonlight p4/5 with my 5.5 year old! I'm wondering if sonlight is the way I should go for a few years, but I also love heart of Dakota's philosophy!! I think we will be done with p4/5 in April bc I'm putting 5 days into 4 since there 5th day is light (and still doing school 5 days a week). I plan to take a few weeks off when we are done but I have to buy used so I need to start gradually buying books and such. Does that help some? Momof2littles
What do you mean by non schoolish - hands on?, not textbooks? minimal writing or worksheets? involving less reading or more reading? computer based or not at all? Minimal worksheets and busy work. Hands on is a yes but lots of literature. Computer based is not important.
Tenaj
Heart of Dakota is my current favorite but I've used Sonlight in the past for that age and enjoyed it. We did Little Heart For His Glory for first grade last year and it was a perfect fit for my then 6yo. I did adjust it and used it only four days a week (we actually started it at the end of his K year and continued it from there).
Chava_Raizel
Check out my curriculum - the link is in my signature. It's secular, but it's easy to add in whatever religion you want.
walkermamaof4
Heart of Dakota vote here too. I've used Sonlight as well. But so far HOD is so much more FUN!!! We still read the SL suggestions, at least for free reading.
...................
Have you looked at Hewitt's Lightening Literature first grade? It's free because it's a pilot program and it'll cost a lot in printing but it looks adorable!
edeemarie
The one problem I had with HOD was the daily schedule. I would have preferred a weekly schedule, but that is just a personal preference:)
Tenaj
The one problem I had with HOD was the daily schedule. I would have preferred a weekly schedule, but that is just a personal preference:) You can use it however you want it. I've taken the schedule and squashed it into all kinds of configurations to suit us. I usually make a weekly grid so that I and my kidlets can see at a glance what needs to be done. sagira
You should definitely take a look at Living Books Curriculum: http://www.livingbookscurriculum.com/ It's - Literature-based - Christian - Flexible schedule - Doesn't feel like traditional school at all

I usually make a weekly grid so that I and my kidlets can see at a glance what needs to be done. I wish hod offered a weekly grid in the book so I wouldn't have to write it all out. I'm lazy! All the years of planning I did while teaching PS has me burnt out!

freeindeed
I like Five in a Row for that age group. http://fiarhq.com/fiveinarow.info/index.html :iagree: We used FIAR when my middle two children were 6 & 8 and we have wonderful memories of that time. SFM
I, too, am planning on using FIAR for my K/1st and right now we are using BFIAR and LOVE it. My son did the last volume of FIAR and it was just great, we really enjoyed doing it together.
~*Beatrix*~
Heart of Dakota would fit the bill perfectly! Christian, lit-based, charlotte mason approach. Love it!
momto2blessings
Have you looked at http://www.simplycharlottemason.com? The handbooks are great. I love that it's planned out by DAY not by week. Sonlight's schedule was too rigid for me...felt messed up if we had a fieldtrip, sick day, etc. With SCM you just 'do the next day.' And it's light enough that you can add other favorites, which I like since we combine w/Truthquest's biblical commentary and some books and movies rec. by then. Esp. for 1st grade, I think it's plenty:) Blessings, G
momto2blessings
Oh, if interested in samples here's a link to the Early Modern Guide:http://simplycharlottemason.com/books/early-modern/. I think their handbooks are a steal for $11:)
hands-on-mama
I vote for either Heart of Dakota or My Father's World. I'm doing MFW K with my oldest right now and then plan to do HOD's K before moving to MFW's 1 st grade. Did that make sense? Lol!
hands-on-mama
Also, th 2nd edition of MFW has a very nice weekly grid. I love their layout.
walkermamaof4
momto2blessings-can I ask if you do scm in the 6 year cycle or do you speed it up? I've always been tempted by scm!
