HiddenJewel Posted July 14, 2008 Posted July 14, 2008 I posted this on the CW board but wanted your input as well. From reading on the website and looking at the samples of the Aesop Workbook A, it looks like the following subjects are covered: Grammar Writing Spelling / Word Analysis Dictionary Skills I currently am using Hake Grammar and Writing and Rod and Staff Spelling 6. It seems that I would be able to replace both of these with Aesop. The purpose of the R&S Spelling is to work on phonics and dictionary use. Am I looking at things correctly? Quote
Beth in Central TX Posted July 14, 2008 Posted July 14, 2008 What grade is your child in? You may want to look at CW for Older Beginners: http://home.att.net/~classicalwriting/Older_Beginners.htm I think CW Aesop would be too simple for a 6th or 7th grader since it is written for 3rd & 4th grade. You can use CW for writing, spelling, word analysis, and dictionary skills. Grammar is incorporated at the Aesop level, but once you reach Homer, the program recommends that you use a grammar program along with CW; they recommend Harvey's Grammar. I use CW, but I still continue R&S grammar and R&S spelling. I think both programs complement each other. Quote

This dd is in 6th grade. The CW website recommends not starting the Older Beginner workbook earlier than 7th grade. Plus my 6th grade dd is weak in grammar and writing so would not be ready for it. She needs to start at the beginning and get a really solid foundation. A quick run through of the levels would not work for her learning style. Quote
Beth in Central TX Posted July 14, 2008 Posted July 14, 2008 I would suggest another grammar book to go along with CW Aesop for a 6th grader; especially if you know that this is not a strong area for her. Both Aesop A & B cover sentences, capitalization & simple punctuation, simple quotes, and the 8 parts of speech. Grammar is usually done on day 3, so the program does not provide a lot of grammar work at this level, and the work that is provided is not very substantial for an older student. I like R&S grammar, but there are plenty of other grammar programs out there that will give your daughter a little more practice than what she will be exposed to in CW Aesop. Of course, this is just my opinion... CW can definitely supply your spelling, word analysis, and dictionary skills work at the Aesop & Homer levels. The other levels may cover these skills also, but I only have experience with these two levels so far. HTH! Quote

Once my books arrive, I'll be able to make a better determination. I have the option of just continuing with Hake alongside Aesop. Quote
