Study Island...grrrr

Recommended Posts

Okay so we are doing the K12 stuff this year and they have this thing called Study Island. My kids are supposed to log 15 minutes per day on this Standardized Testing prep.

This is horrible.

My 5th grade dd has no clue what to do with it and my 2nd grader has to have me sit next to her to read each one of these things.

agonizing!

I've told them to do the best that they can and not to stress if they get EVERY single one of them wrong.

This is SO irritating.

(I know it is the nature of the virtual PS beast, but I do want to gripe about it.)

I have to say. Explanations are horrible. Yes I was told by my ES/charter school that you should be next to them while they are doing this. HAHAHA with three kids doing it. Yah right!

Anyways, my kids have to do all four subjects a day everyday.

5th grade is much harder for them than fourth grade.

Your 5th grader should have the reading skills to handle this on his own. There are lessons, then exercises.

Your 2nd grader needs to be interacted with to complete,i.e., you reading and she answers.

Honestly, this isn't such a big deal. Study Island is just reinforcement of basic skills.

DD~9 likes the game mode. 15 min is about all a kid wants to do in a sitting. In 4th grade I want my DD to read and do it on her own.

My older DD went through all the subjects and all the grade levels she could in 5th grade. She's an over achiever. She thought it was fun.

I look at Study Island as a tool.

We were w/ OHVA w/ DS9 and still w/ them for DS7. We were told Study Island is mandatory. We DON'T do it, do well on testing and have never been reprimanded for not doing it. I think it's not on task, a review frequently of things my kids know, mostly testing rather than teaching. FWIW....:auto:
