Jumping In Puddles Posted July 14, 2008 Posted July 14, 2008 My husband has a possibility of a transfer to South Jersey and we may be moving. What towns are worth looking at? I noticed the further south you go, the cheaper the homes. Ideally, I would like to be around Red Bank but as far south as Pt. Pleasant would be ok. Any towns that are family friendly and have active homeschool groups? If you live down that area, how do you like it? I notice Toms River has a lot of homes for sale. Thanks! Quote
Bess Posted July 14, 2008 Posted July 14, 2008 Don't live there now, but I LOVE the town of Freehold. Especially the downtown area with the cafes outside and the historic homes. There is also a Wegmans (best grocery store on earth!!!) and a great mall in town as well. Quote

Hi Sharon, I grew up on the Jersey Shore. I graduated from Toms River High School East. I do not live there now, but I still visit almost weekly. Your cost of living is going to be much cheaper in Ocean County than Monmouth county for the most part. Where are you moving from? Quote
DB in NJ Posted July 14, 2008 Posted July 14, 2008 My bil is from Forked River, which is kinda nice. Tom's River has more to offer. I have no other advice, as I live further south (exit 5). But according to your avatar, you may REALLY want to check out Freehold ;) :D Quote

For a commute, Toms River is much better since it is near the Parkway. Plus It is so very close to the beach. Quote

Thanks, I'm moving from North West NJ where cost of living is fairly reasonable but my husband commutes an hour each way, 5 days a week so that really adds up. Quote

I know how you feel. We are in central west New Jersey right now. Dh used to have a 20 minute drive to the train and then 1 1/2 hour ride into the NY city everyday. Now, he is working form home. *anj* Posted July 14, 2008 Posted July 14, 2008 I know the Rumson/Red Bank area pretty well. Isn't Karenciavo in south Jersey?:auto: Yeah, but not "down the shore." She's closer to Cherry Hill, right Karen? Quote
*anj* Posted July 14, 2008 Posted July 14, 2008 There's a good group in Howell. I know that there is a decent sized group in that area and Brick. Would dh be working in Red Bank? He has a few choices: Red Bank, Shrewsbury, Lakewood... I think there were more, my dh is coming home with a list tomorrow. Quote

*anj* Posted July 15, 2008 Posted July 15, 2008 It is a 3% tax zone. Okay, I know what you mean by that, but you might want to do some 'splainin', Lucy! ;) Quote
Karenciavo Posted July 15, 2008 Posted July 15, 2008 I'm from Point Pleasant Beach, family still lives there. Shrewsbury is pretty expensive, but it is a cute town (my SIL lives there.) Red Bank is OK, wouldn't be my 1st choice. Toms River is crazy crowded and has a very high cancer rate due to Ciba Geigy. The rate has been falling, but I wouldn't live there. I love Point Pleasant Beach, the Boro is nice too. Do you want to live in a beach town? Quote

Working in Lakewood wouldn't be bad, but I wouldn't want to live there (I actually did live there from 1972-1975.) Other good towns to live are Manasquan, Wall, Sea Girt, Spring Lake, Tinton Falls, Brielle, Howell, Farmingdale, Deal, Lincroft. They are all in Monmouth County are are more expensive on average than you would find in Ocean County where Pt. Pleasant and Lakewood are located. Quote
chaik76 Posted July 15, 2008 Posted July 15, 2008 I was so excited when I first read this...but we're in a totally different state next to a town named "Jersey Shore"! Quote

Thanks for the link... No, I don't have to live in a beach town but I do like beach towns. It's just more important to live in a nice community where there are a lot of kids and kids activities/sports to choose from. Also important is access to farmer's markets or farm stands. Working in Lakewood wouldn't be bad, but I wouldn't want to live there (I actually did live there from 1972-1975.) Thanks, I've been noticing the price difference between Monmouth and Ocean. I have always wanted to live in Sea Girt but unfortunately that is way out of our price range. I was so excited when I first read this...but we're in a totally different state next to a town named "Jersey Shore"! That must be confusing! Quote

We have a very high cancer rate in my family and we were right on top of this issue. My parents were very involved. This is why no matter where we move too, we always have our water tested. Even, if it is city water. In the town, we live in now we have dry cleaning fluid in our town water, plus farming chemicals. We have installed a whole house water filtration device. Quote

I'm sure you're right, but there is also the issue of how congested the area is and it doesn't appeal to me. Quote
