Only me
My 17 year old dd is currently taking a class that is self-paced and will take her through algebra 1 and algebra 2 this semester at the community college. She already took algebra 1 in 8th grade and took geometry in 9th grade. She did not take any math last year (long story). When she took the placement test for the college last month she didn't do well enough to place out of algebra and that is why she is taking it again. She did well with the Math-U-See Geometry but they won't accept that at the community college since it is not accredited. She will also need one more math class after that in order to graduate from high school but can't take that class until she completes an accredited geometry class. I am trying to find an accredited geometry class (preferably online or something that she can do independently). It should be a lot of review so I think she can go through it pretty quickly. Any suggestions?
Sebastian (a lady)
Most homeschool courses are not accredited. My understanding is that accreditation is something earned by an institution, not by a curriculum. Maybe you can look at math offerings from schools that offer distance degrees. Kolbe has always looked interesting. There are also virtual offerings in my area used by school districts (though again I think the courses are not from an accredited provider). But I think you might also need to have the cc clarify what their expectations are. For example can you kid take a new placement test after completing the geometry course. Perhaps they could give you examples of home school or self study programs accepted in the past.
Enjoyinglife365
I think bridgewayacademy.com has one
Ellie
Most homeschool courses are not accredited. My understanding is that accreditation is something earned by an institution, not by a curriculum. This is true, and it has nothing to do with "homeschooling." Only schools can be accredited, not publishers or courses. You'd need to find an accredited distance-learning school of some kind from which your child can take a single course for credit. I'd also question someone at the c.c. more closely. I know that it varies widely from state to state, but I don't remember hearing that a community college wanted a transcript from an *accredited* school before allowing an applicant. And what does the c.c. wanting geometry from an accredited school have to do with your dd graduating from high school?
K in MI
Check out American School of Correspondence. They use Holt/McDougal/Larson "Geometry" for the text.
Only me
Ellie, she needs proof of taking geometry before she can take anything past intermediate algebra. She needs 4 math credits to get her diploma through Homelife Academy. I went over to the school today and after being shuffled around for an hour was told to send a letter including the course description and everything covered (dd took Math-u-see geometry in 9th grade). After they receive the letter they will decide whether or not to accept the geometry. I'm not holding my breath. If they don't accept it she will have to take the geometry portion of the Compass test and pass out of it. So I may just do some review with her and see if she remembers enough to pass the test.
