MeaganS
My 4 year old starts dance class tomorrow, and I have no idea whether she should wear underwear under her leotard. I was never in dance or gymnastics, so I honestly don't know. Help me not look clueless!
Mandylubug
in gymnastics most 4 year olds still wear their undies. Some don't though. My gals wear biketards and no undies.. they go loosey goosey :D eta: this is just my observation at our gym
Lovin Learnin
Yes she can wear her undies but they will show. My experience is that the little girls don't notice and don't care. My dd just started dancing without undies this year because she didn't like the way it looked with them, but a younger child might not like the way it feels without them. staceyobu
No undies. Just tights. They show and look tacky. And then when she gets older you'll have to convince her not to wear them. Better to just start that way from day 1.
Classical Country Mama
I'm sure it depends on how formal the studio is. At our local place, all the younger classes wore undies except at recital performances.
jennynd
Wow, I didn't even think that. Dd starts next week, I guess I need to get her some Unitard

chepyl
If they get used to undies with tights and leos, it is hard to take the undies off for recital. They don't like the way it feels.
IsabelC
My 7yo wears underpants under her leotard, but she wears gymshorts over the top so the undies don't show. My 4yo (who is passionately against any unnecessary clothing) just wears a leotard with nothing else. The advantage of wearing undies is that you won't need to wash the leotard as often. But if you'd rather she didn't, the easiest way to explain it is to say her leotard is like her swimsuit.

Mommy22alyns
The girls always wore undies for gymnastics. After a couple of years for Rebecca, she changed the gym uniform and added shorts, which made us all very happy. Both girls always wear shorts with their leos now. Except that Becca can't wear shorts with her competition leo! :001_huh: That will be an adventure.
MeaganS
Haha, so yet again this board is unable to reach a consensus.
ktgrok
I'd do tights and a leo. No undies. I think undies peeking out look silly. The tights have a cotton crotch I believe, so are like undies.

Ellie
My dds always did. Maybe the legs are cut higher on leotards today than they were 30 years ago? I never noticed any problems with the undies showing. Of course, for their recital, they wore very classic ballet costumes, not the skin-tight things that many studios have today.
