S/O on Parrothead's DD wanting to go to Harvard or Yale to major in dance and run a dance studio.

My DD wants to go to college in Hawaii (due to volcanoes) or somewhere with interesting reptiles (University of FL is a front runner, due solely to their mascot) She wants to major in Herpetology, Paleontology, folklore/comparative mythology, "Fun, hard math problems, vulcanology, and roller coaster engineering. Oh, and she wants a UCA competitive cheer team. And they have to let her keep snakes in the dorm.:glare:

I figure she'll be on at LEAST a 6 year plan-maybe more!!

Anyone else's DC have very definite, albeit unrealistic college goals?

Oldest dd's research mentor at U of M is encouraging her to attend Harvard, Stanford, or MIT and then come back for her grad work. Her dream is CalTech, but she knows that isn't going to happen. :D

Middle dd wants to go to Stanford or MIT and study math. I think she likes the idea of going to California, which would involve being spoiled by her favorite bachelor uncle who lives out there. She also really liked Carnegie-Mellon when we visited, though.

Little guy has no clue. He's been on a half dozen college visits already, though. :D He will probably go somewhere near oldest dd, because he can't live without her.

Older wants to go to Standford, which is a heart breaking for me. We wanted him to go to Notre Dame, both my and my husband's Alma mater.. We actually got football tickets for Standard and Notre Dame this year. We gonna make DS to wear our shirt rather than Stanford. He is not a happy guy.

He wants to go there for pre-vet and go Cornell for vet. Which is kinda strange coincident because I turned Cornell down before.

I think my son probably thinks he's going to University of Alabama in Huntsville, since DH and I both graduated from there, and he goes to all their hockey games. I'm going to encourage him toward another school probably, at least if he plans to go into engineering. I thought it was too easy (like when my professor RAVED about the senior design project my group did for EE that had no electronic design in it whatsoever - it was ALL software! And fairly easy software at that!).

Currently, his field of choice is meteorology, as he wants to be a storm chaser. And I can totally see him becoming one too. :tongue_smilie: So if that happened, he'd probably go out west to school. He doesn't know anything about the schools out there, and neither do I.

S/O on Parrothead's DD wanting to go to Harvard or Yale to major in dance and run a dance studio.

I'm hoping maybe I can steer her toward Boston College. :D Or U of Maine - Farmington. (They actually do have a really good dance program.)

I really don't know what she is going to do. Her passion has been dance since she was 3 years old. Yet her brain is right there near or at the gifted level. (I've never had her tested.) I wouldn't mind sending her to a top school somewhere, but I'm not sure if I want to spend that kind of money for her to open a dance studio in small town Maine.

Hence my search for STEM toys and opening doors to other things. Maybe something will click and take hold. But I won't hold my breath waiting. Her father and I never walked through the doors. I tested a couple points shy of gifted, and all I ever wanted to do was be a mom. Dh would have been considered very bright, but all he ever wanted to do is be a firefighter.

Me: Hey there's a thread on the WTM boards about our kids' dream college. So where do you want to go?

Kid: (mumbles) Somewhere good (head buried deep in The Mysterious Island)

Me: (splutter) you're funny. Anywhere specific?

Kid: Cambridge. I want to work with John Conway. (Conway is now in Princeton BTW, I think kiddo is unaware of that)

Me: Golly, we should think about going IB instead of AP eh?

Kid: what's IB?

Me: (I explain) and you might have to pay your own way if you want to go abroad kiddo. OK, so if you did your undergrad in the US, where would you want to go?

Kid: Harvard, or maybe MIT (starts to show more interest in the conversation)...and then I could go to Cambridge and learn the British accent...oh wait, maybe I could go to University of Berlin if my German improves...oh wait mom! How about a Russian university? They have really good mathematicians in Russia!

Me: OK please go back to your book! {starting to have a dull pain in the head}

Methinks me should focus on more language electives now.

For a long time, DD's goal was Cornell with jr. year abroad at Fashion Institute of Technology-Paris. She really wanted to go to FIT, but unless she got a full scholarship, she knew that wasn't going to happen. Cornell has the fashion design major and so long as she double-majored in something a bit more pragmatic like business, DH was okay with her doing that.

After taking a fashion illustration class through a local arts education program, she decided that she isn't actually all that interested in going into fashion as a career.

Now she is considering becoming a speech & language pathologist. For that career, it probably would make the most sense for her to attend the local Cal State since that has a Communicative Disorders major that meets the pre-SLP requirements. There is an honors program at the school that she would presumably qualify for, and while SLP's make decent salaries, they are not super-high so it would not be smart to pay a lot for the undergrad degree.

Heh. I got the panicky, "I need to learn Russian! All the good graduate programs in math want me to know Russian! And German! Hungarian and Romanian would be good, too!" So we're learning Russian...

Quark, is Kid counting the days until he's old enough to go to MathPath and take class with Professor Conway? It's still weird to be reading something about, say, knot theory and have my son mutter, "Oh, right. Professor Conway told me that."

My 6 year old wants to know if there's a college to go to after Hogwarts.

My 9 year old asked if he could be homeschooled for college. He's hoping to get into the Govenor's School of Math and Science SC for 11th and 12th grades and has trouble seeing after that at this point. But the kid is only 9, so we're in no rush!

Circus arts or puppetry...

She isn't kidding, and she seems to have some talent. She does aerial dance and circus arts and has been slowly trying to get into our local puppetry scene. She is doing a bunch of related classes this fall.

She has some more traditional talents and interests too but I am happy to see her embrace her creative ones.

We saw Cirque du Soleil last weekend, and that is her goal!

MathPath kids take classes with Conway? OMGoodGolly, I didn't know that! Should I tell him? I don't know if we can afford it. He would SO want to go.

Thanks for letting me know Belacqua! I will think positively and hope hard enough that we can afford it before he ages out.

He did try Camp Euclid this summer (thanks to mathwonk's suggestion in another thread). They were generous with the aid and kiddo had a blast!

I actually know somebody who did circus school before attending Harvard. Seriously! She was the daughter of the folks who owned the local paper where my mom was a PT reporter. Here is an interesting article in the Harvard alumni magazine on her.

Juilliard. For music, or drama. It just seems like the competition is so intense...but I guess it is a good goal to have...I think she potentially has the talent. But if she puts in the time and doesn't get in, she will certainly have skills that will serve her well elsewhere. I think she would also really love to be an English major somewhere like Yale. I am thinking honors program in a state school is the more practical option, barring scholarships. Oh--and she would also love Hogwarts!

  • 2 weeks later...

I'm pretty sure none of my boys will want to go to MIT after hearing countless stories from DH about his coworkers who went there.

Currently, DS1 lists William & Mary as his top choice, followed by UNC-Chapel Hill. He thinks he would like to major in history.

DS2 says there are too many colleges to choose from. He will likely pursue a STEM career, probably computer science (he has the 'learning disability' that will allow him to thrive in this area).

DS3 says he will be running his own gardening restaurant and building his own house, so he won't have time for college.

DS4 says he isn't going to go to college until after he gets a mom (he means after he gets married), then he'll go to the college his mom goes to (he means wife). And he will take his laptop. And the charge cord.

DS5 says he's going to do college at our homeschool co-op.

I have all 5 on a college prep track, though... just in case they change their mind. ;)

My boys have no idea where they'd like to go to college. No dream schools and they are closest to deciding...my oldest will be deciding very soon.

My youngest says Juilliard, Curtis, or Berklee in Boston (she just heard from a friend going there this year, that you can study all kinds of music there rather than just classical)...or she wants to study Irish music in Ireland.

:glare: my kids "Dream School" is to NOT go to school. I think I spoiled them with "real life" experiences....:glare:

My boys loathe the idea of a classroom setting. My girls are/were ok with it...and both graduated Summa Cum Laude....2nd in grad school now.....but, oh,...how they couldn't WAIT to be done and doing real life....AND THOSE BOYS!!!!!!!! Oh my, they are just breaking this mom's heart. Here are 2 boys with very high intelligence.....who just.won't. Budge. When it comes to college. Maybe they will be late bloomers. Good thing is they will have enough money to pay for their own schooling by then.....always some kind of silver lining....sigh....

My DS wants to go to GA Tech and study aerospace engineering. He's been sure about this for a long time. I don't know if it's unrealistic, but I told him he'd have to start saving up since it's out of state for us. He really wants to build real spaceships.

Right now, he wishes we lived near a Sudbury school.
