I'm pulling together a world cultures study for my Ker this fall, and have most everything ready. What I am missing is a great list of read aloud fiction books. I'm looking at a 1-2 grade level. I plan on a very loose continent based study, so anything dealing with, say, Africa--any country, unique animal, unique culture etc. I'll probaby break up Asia a bit, but want to keep things general. Any suggestions?

I have a nice book called Faraway Places by Catherine Blakemore - it lists approximately 900 picture books for 3 to 8 year olds, broken down by country. You might see if your library has it.

Thanks everyone! Sparkle, I'm off to look for the book right now--thanks for the recommendation. And since I'll be at the library, I'll snoop around in the 398s to see what I can find.

Is it just me or is there an excitement to this sort of hunt? ...armed only with a call number, I venture into the depths of the stacks...:D

I asked recently for my slightly older kids, but some of the responses I got might help you as well:

As someone else suggested, try Sonlight -- especially their K program, which emphasizes introducing kids to the world.

You might try the Elizabeti books are great picture books to check out for your study of Africa. For simple chapter books, try Akimbo...

For Japan, my kids loved the picture book, A Pair of Red Clogs.

Some great books that cover quick visits to several continents or regions are:

Miranda the Explorer

Madlenka

How to Make an Apple Pie and See the World
