gandpsmommy Posted July 13, 2008 Posted July 13, 2008 I'm just wondering what sorts of articles are included. I thought it might be of interest to my kids, since my son enjoys watching National Geographic specials on tv. It is recommended for ages 6-14, but I'm thinking my almost 5yo ds would probably benefit from it. Right now Nat Geo is running a special promotion that would allow us to get a one year subscription for $15. I'm thinking that if it is a good magazine, that would be a great bargain. Thanks for any input. Quote
Miss Peregrine Posted July 13, 2008 Posted July 13, 2008 We didn't like it. Very little "National Geographic" type content and loads of pop culture. Quote
Kathleen in VA Posted July 13, 2008 Posted July 13, 2008 We didn't like it. Very little "National Geographic" type content and loads of pop culture. :iagree: I found there was always a big spread about the latest up and coming movie - like a big advertisement. We subscribed for years (a gift from my dad) and I finally just said please stop renewing. I also did not like the layout - very hard on the eyes and distracting. I was hoping for more educational articles and not so much empty hype. Quote
gandpsmommy Posted July 13, 2008 Author Posted July 13, 2008 I guess I won't waste the money. Thanks! Quote
Mom2legomaniacs Posted July 13, 2008 Posted July 13, 2008 We didn't like it. Very little "National Geographic" type content and loads of pop culture. Yet another :iagree:. It was much better when I was a kid and it wasn't loaded with pop culture. My kids liked it well enough though. Another one that we have really enjoyed is called ZooBooks. All about animals, but really nice. Quote
love2read Posted July 13, 2008 Posted July 13, 2008 Keep your eyes open on ebay for National Geographic For Kids before 2003 because the older ones are very good. Five years ago I bought a huge lot from the late 90s for very little money. The children have read them over and over. Quote
chanda7 Posted July 14, 2008 Posted July 14, 2008 There was a recent thread on this with the same reviews. I was sorely disappointed with the content, or rather the lack thereof, in the magazine. The graphical interface is very busy, it seems to promote an upcoming or recently released movie every issue, etc. Most of the content was very inappropriate for my 6yo. Quote
Laurie Posted July 14, 2008 Posted July 14, 2008 My dd(11) really enjoys it even though she's usually not that interested in animal/nature themes. Even my ds(14) will still take a look. I have to admit that National Geographic did not excite either of them so I dropped that subscription for now. Our August issue features: "Amazing Animal Friends" (true stories of friendships between different species), "Dolphins" (meet the unusual creatures in the dolphin family), "20 Cool Things about Butterflies", "Leopard Rescue", etc. There are also fun pages with jokes, games, and 6 pull-out animal "collector" cards. This issue does have an article about a new movie called "Space Chimps", but it's not a dominant theme throughout the whole magazine. Just my .02 of course, but I'd give it a try and see for yourself. Your dc might really enjoy it! Quote
Deeke Posted July 14, 2008 Posted July 14, 2008 We didn't like it. Very little "National Geographic" type content and loads of pop culture. Yes, I agree...seems to me I remember a lot of advertising also. Quote
nmoira Posted July 14, 2008 Posted July 14, 2008 very disappointing!!!!!I'd add a few more exclamation marks. I canceled after 2 issues. Quote
