hsing1 Posted July 13, 2008 Posted July 13, 2008 I noticed Christianbook.com has them under spelling. It got me wondering if anyone uses them for spelling. I've always thought of them for phonics reinforcement. What are your thought on using ETC as a spelling program? Quote
Bula Mama Posted July 13, 2008 Posted July 13, 2008 I don't use these specifically for spelling, but I don't start any other spelling program until my dc are finished with these. HTH! Quote
sweetfeet Posted July 13, 2008 Posted July 13, 2008 I don't use these specifically for spelling, but I don't start any other spelling program until my dc are finished with these. HTH! That's my plan as well. ETC is awesome for teaching phonics and I think a child should be comfortable knowing phonics before trying to spell. I think it makes spelling a lot easier. Quote
chiguirre Posted July 14, 2008 Posted July 14, 2008 ETC isn't a formal spelling program, but the last page in each lesson has the child write words using the new phonograms from memory. If they can do that, their spelling skills are coming along nicely, IMHO. Quote

Lovedtodeath Posted July 14, 2008 Posted July 14, 2008 YES! DD is reading at a 4th gr level. Instead of AAS I chose ETC for spelling for now. The way the words are read, sounded out, etc. before the student does the spelling page builds up to it nicely. I thought I might use letter magnets or tiles, as ETC has the student write the words. Remembering how to spell the word and how to form the letters at the same time is too difficult for some students, but DD did not have a problem. The only worry I have at this point is when to start Megawords, which is what I plan to use next. HTH Quote

We cover the opposite page (no peeking!) and I read the list of words, ds spells them, and then we check the spelling. Quote
