wonderfilled
My son is interested in whittling and wood carving. He doesn't have much experience except for sharpening sticks into arrows. Does anyone have any ideas of a good beginner's book? I've looked on Amazon, but I was wondering if anybody has any experience with this. Also, is there any special tools we need to buy. I saw this kit http://www.woodcraft.com/product/2004800/8174/hobby-and-craft-tool-set-23-piece.aspx somewhere. Does it look useful for that type of thing? Thanks! CandaceC
I would love to know this as well. My son is only 7yrs but he is obsessed with pocket knives, whittling, wood carving, weapons of any sort. I am concerned about him only being 7, he doesn't have his own pocket knife yet because I don't feel he is responsible enough yet. But if I could find something that he could do with Dh then that might work. :)
starwarsmomma
the boy scout shops (and online) sell a whittling kit that my son loves. They also have project books, but I've also seen identical books at amazon. http://www.scoutstuff.org/kidskills-wood-carving.html http://www.scoutstuff.org/carving-tool-set.html

He followed the tips and suggestions in his Bear handbook, drew what he hoped it would look like, and jumped in.
SilverMoon
Here are the materials the bigger boys use while working on their merit badges. (Boy Scouts are mid-5th grade to 6th grade on up. Cub Scouts are 1st through 5th.) Wood Carving Woodwork And here are their kits. In my experience they're less expensive than any you'll find at a hardware store or otherwise. KristenR
:iagree: My Cub Scout's first whittling project was a bar of soap, actually. He followed the tips and suggestions in his Bear handbook, drew what he hoped it would look like, and jumped in. My kiddos whittled with soap and plastic knives awhile back. I posted some pics here. For those with young kids its a great place to start.
