I need a knockout chocolate cake recipe for dd's 8th birthday tomorrow.

Recommended Posts

This cake is so simple, your 8yo could probably make it on her own. You can use your favorite chocolate cake recipe instead of the box mix if you like, just divide the batter the same. Even though it's so simple, this is the cake everyone in my family and circle of friends requests over and over again. Sometimes I like to use more caramel, too.

Turtle Cake

1 box chocolate cake mix

1 (14 oz) bag caramels

1 (12 oz) bag chocolate chips

½ c. evaporated milk

½ c. butter

½ c. chopped nuts

Mix cake according to directions. Pour half of the batter into a greased and floured 9x13 pan. Bake at 350 for 15 minutes.

Melt the caramels and butter. Stir in the milk. Put half each of the chocolate chips and nuts on the hot cake. Pour the caramel mixture over this. Add remaining cake batter. Sprinkle the remaining chocolate chips and nuts on top and bake for 20 to 30 minutes or until done.

I would love to make something truly decadent, like something you'd eat in a restaurant but I don't know what the name is to search for it.

She wants chocolate on chocolate. I'll go to the store as soon as I figure out which cake and what ingredients we may need.

I've got an awesome recipe for a spectacular flourless chocolate cake that is called "Decadent Chocolate Cake". I can get you the recipe in about an hour. It's so fabulous that I made it several months ago for a Women's Ministry thing and yesterday, while at another Women's Ministry thing, this cake was brought up and raved about as one of the best desserts they've every had.

We love the one on the Hershey's cocoa tin. I make it with a chocolate whipping cream topping. That is to die for good. You do need to keep it in the fridge.

Yes - my family has been making this cake for birthdays for about 15 years. But we put chocolate icing on top :)

We love that cake, too. I make it with choc. pudding filling and with the Hershey's choc. frosting recipe that is also on the tin. I'll have to try the choc whipped cream topping next time. Yum!

Unless JudoMom comes along with a die-for recipe, I think I'll try the Hershey Cake with the frosting from this Mexican Torte for the inside frosting (3 layers) and chocolate frosting for the outside. Thank you all!

ACK! Here I am! I'm so sorry!!!

Crust:

20 Chocolate Wafers, finely crushed

2 Tbsp butter, melted

Cake:

12 squares (1 oz each) semi-sweet baking chocolate

3/4 cup butter

6 eggs, separated

12 tbsp granulated sugar, divided

2 tsp vanilla

Glaze:

6 squares (1 oz each) semi-sweet baking chocolate

2 tbsp butter

3 tbsp milk

2 tbsp light corn syrup

Garnish(optional):

3 squares (1 oz each) semi-sweet baking chocolate

powdered sugar (optional)

1. Preheat oven to 350*. Light spray Springform pan with non stick cooking spray. For crust, finely crush chocolate wafers. Melt butter. Stir in crumbs, mix well. Press crumb mixture onto bottom of pan.

2. For cake, melt chocolate and butter over very low heat, stirring occasionally until smooth. Remove from heat. Cool slightly, stirring occasionally.

3. Separate eggs. Place yolks in a medium bowl. Beat egg yolks & 6 tbsp sugar on high speed until mixture is very thick & pale (about 3 minutes). Add cooled chocolate mixture, beat on low speed. Blend in vanilla.

4. Using clean, dry beaters, beat egg whites until soft peaks form. Gradually add remaining 6 tbsp sugar, 1 tbsp at a time, beating until stiff peaks form. Fold egg whites into chocolate mixture until well blended. Pour batter into pan.

5. Bake 45-50 minutes or until top is puffed and cracked (toothpick will come out with moist crumbs attached). Cool completely. Run knife around sides of pan to loosen cake. Release collar from pan.

6. For glaze, melt chocolate and butter in a clean saucepan over very low heat, stirring occasionally until smooth. Remove pan from heat; stir in milk & corn syrup. Spread glaze evenly over top & sides of cake. Refrigerate until glaze ia almost set (about 30 minutes) before garnishing.

7. Meanwhile, for glaze, line a baking sheet with parchment paper. Melt chocolate and pour onto parchment paper in a 10 inch circle. Place in freezer for 5 minutes to firm. Break chocolate into large pieces; sprinkle top of cake and chocolate pieces with powdered sugar. Arrange chocolate pieces randomly over cake, lightly pressing into glaze and cake. Refrigerate up to 1 hour before serving.

I have the 1937 Hershey's Cookbook this is the cake:

HERSHEY'S FUDGE CAKE

~1 3/4 cup unbleached flour, unsifted

[*]1 tsp baking powder

  • 1 tsp baking soda
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1/2 cup vegetable shortening
  • 1 1/2 cups sugar
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 2/3 cup unsweetened cocoa powder (less if using dutch process)
  • 2 to 3 tbsp hot water

1 cup milk mixed with 1 tbsp vinegar or lemon juice (to make sour milk)

Grease the bottoms and sides of two (9x1 1/2-inch) layer cake pans and preheat the oven to 350 degrees F.

Combine the flour, baking powder, baking soda, and salt, blending well, and set aside.

Cream the shortening and sugar, with an electric mixer set on high, and beat in the eggs and vanilla extract and continue beating until light and fluffy.

Blend the cocoa into the hot water to make a smooth paste. Gradually add the cocoa mixture to the creamed mixture, stirring to blend well. Add the flour mixture alternately with the milk to the creamed mixture, beating well after each addition. Pour the batter into the prepared pans.

Bake in the preheated oven for 20 to 30 minutes, or until the tops spring back when lightly pressed. Cool on racks for 10 minutes and remove from the pans to cool completely. Frost with Chocolate-Buttercream Frosting.

I can post the frosting if your looking for that too!

I'm on my way! :auto: :D

Debra, chocolate cakeaholic ;)

I love chocolate cake, too. My oldest, who has a birthday on the 23rd, has decided he wants Apple Pie for his birthday. Hrmph. I mean, apple pie is tasty and all, but why would you pick that when you could have chocolate cake?!?!

I can tell you this is one amazing cake. I have standing orders weekly for this cake from the gym I go to. I workout at the gym for free because of this cake recipe!

3 oz. Baker's unsweetened chocolate

1c. butter (I know, I know, but, it is a cake)

2 1/4 c. packed brown sugar

3 eggs

2 1/4 c. cake flour

2 tsp. baking soda

1/2 tsp. salt

1/2 c. buttermilk (or milk with 1/2 tsp. of vinegar)

1 c. boiling water

2 tsp. vanilla extract

Melt the chocolate and set aside. Cream together butter and sugar. Add the eggs one at a time beating well on low speed after each egg. Stir in melted chocolate.

Combine the flour, baking soda, and salt. Alternating between the two, add the flour mixture and the buttermilk to the chocolate mixture in three stages ending with the flour. Slowly stir in the boiling water and vanilla.

Pour the batter into 2 9-inch cake pans which have been greased and floured. Bake at 375 for about 30 minutes or until a toothpick comes out clean.

Frosting:

1 1/2 c. smisweet chocolate morsels

1 stick of butter (I know!)

2/3 c. milk

1tsp. vanilla extract

1 c. powdered sugar

Melt the butter and choc. chips in a pan over low heat. Remove the pan from the heat and stir in the milk and vanilla and transfer the mixture to a mixing bowl. Add the sugar gradually beating with an electric mixer. Continue beating until the mixture is smooth; it will be runny.

Refrigerate the mixture for 1 hour, beating it well every 15 minutes. The icing will stiffen.

Trust me!:D

I hope he has a great day! We're broke so making a cake is cheaper than the $27.99 one that dd really wants. All I have to buy is another Hershey cocoa container and we're in business. :) Plus, it'll be fun.

Jessica,

What kind of cake did she want?

There was one year when everyone in our family wanted a Coldstone ice cream cake, and they cost around $30. Yikes! That's not a habit we could keep going. Gotta love a homemade cake, eh? ;)

She wanted a Publix chocolate cake that had a tiara and sceptor (sp?) on it and wanted to put candy decor on it. Now the one she first saw was the castle cake but there is no way I'm paying that much for it for 4-5 people.

this is the $27.99 one she wants below, the princess castle cake is above $50, ouch.

C'mon, who can't make a sheet cake and put a tiara and sceptor on it from the dollar store?? She wants the cake to be chocolate chocolate. Lol.

I make and decorate cakes as a hobby here is mine; a dr. box

1 choc. cake mix

1 choc. instant pudding

4 eggs

1 cup of sour cream

1/2 cup of oil

1/4 cup of water

1 teaspoon of vanilla

1/2 pkg of mini choc. chips

Mix everything except chco. chips save those for last then pour in and mix long enough to evenly dispurse the chips. Pour batter into your pan, I like to cook my cakes slow so 325 for at least an hour check with toothpick method. Depending on oven this can take up to an hour and half. Let cakes cool.

For frosting I like a choc mousse

2 cups of heavy whipping cream

16 ozs of melted choc, your favorite kind always work

4 Tbl of powdersugar

1 Tbl of vanillia

whip 1 1/2 cups of the cream to stiff peaks, but don't over beat

In double boiler melt the remaining 1/2 cup of cream and chocolate

let this cool of a bit then fold into the cream let stand in the fridge for an hour or so while cake cools.

Then fill and frost. Just typing this I think I have to go make one for us to day. I hope your dd birthday goes well. :grouphug:

This come from a great cook book called the Cake Doctor, a great investment for anyone.

Sheesh, we don't have a birthday coming up anytime soon here, and *I'm* about to make a chocolate cake for the fun of it thanks to this thread. Of course, if I make it the danger will be I'll eat most it myself! :001_huh:

There's nothing wrong with whipping up a chocolate cake, just because, is there? Other than the damage it'll do to my already widening hips?
