helena
This is the one book she's giving me grief about. It's for History Odyssey (Early Modern), so it needs to be set in that time period and deal with similar issues. What do you think? Any ideas? :bigear:
redsquirrel
Christmas Carol? Same author, same issues (and different ones), short story instead of novel.
Heather in VA
Great Expectations would be another option. Heather

Okay, I just found a beautiful old copy of Christmas Carol for $.25. YAY!
helena
Great Expectations would be another option. Heather I've got a copy of that somewhere... I'm going to collect a few potentials and let her choose. Thanks! :lurk5:
Heidi @ Mt Hope
North and South by Elizabeth Gaskell. The author was a contemporary of Dickens and North and South deals with boths sides of the industrial world and the difference between the North and South of England, with a love story similar to Pride and Prejudice. Thanks! I'll pick that one up at the library book store next time I see it. We looked it up to read about it and my daughter recognized the PBS movie cover. I guess I had put it in our Netflix queue... is the movie okay for kids?

The movie is one of my all-time favorites--on par with the BBC Pride & Prejudice. It is a little darker and there are a few deaths, but it is an excellent movie and should be just fine for a 13 yo. My daughters are in love with Jane Austin movies and they're ready for something new but similar. Maybe it'll make her want to read the book. :001_smile:
