8th grade reading?

Recommended Posts

What books do you suggest for an 8th grader? My cousin is a teacher, and she suggested The Book Thief, so that will be our first book which I will use as historical fiction. I know that I want him to read a biography, mystery, etc, but I'm not sure exactly what. I think our next book will be A Wrinkle in Time b/c we have that book on hand. Any suggestions?

I just finished putting a reading list together for my dd who will be in the 8th grade this year. We're studying US history, so it will reflect that. I set it up so that for each term, she has a few required books, then a list of options to choose 2-3 books from.

Term 1:

Required

The King's Fifth

The Landing of the Pilgrims

The Autobiography of Benjamin Franklin

Much Ado About Nothing

Optional

North American Indian Myths

Calico Captive

The Adventurous Life of Myles Standish

Johnny Tremain

Term 2:

Required

Traitor: The Case for Benedict Arnold

Streams to the River, Rivers to the Sea

Amos Fortune: Free Man

The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy

Optional

The Sherwood Ring

Finishing Becca

My Brother Sam is Dead

Wolf by the Ears

Term 3:

Required:

Lincoln: A Photobiography

Uncle Tom's Cabin

The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn

Optional

Across Five Aprils

Ender's Game

Gone With the Wind

Bully for You Teddy Roosevelt

Term 4:

Required

Of Mice and Men

To Kill a Mockingbird

The Hiding Place

A Tree Grows in Brooklyn

Optional

Out of the Dust

Cheaper by the Dozen

Dragonwings OR Dragon's Gate

Under A War Torn Sky

Farewell to Manzanar

I put together reading lists (read aloud as well as independent reading) using these books and websites as resources:

The Well Trained Mind

The Read Aloud Handbook

Books To Build On

The Educated Child

Ambleside Online (website)

NPR has a Backseat Book Club that has wonderful selections. We're using Arrow guides from Bravewriter as read alouds. Boomerang is the guides for older students.

You could also pull from the list of Newberry award winner books.
