SOTW Question

We are doing Vol. 3 this year. The first two volumes we did through a tutorial. They assigned do many worksheets that it left little time for us to explore the additional reading. This year, however, we are not doing the tutorial and I really want to add in some of the reading. So, my question is how do you implement it in your school? Do you read a chapter in SOTW and then put it away while you do some of the other reading? For example, we finished chapter 1 and are now reading a children's collection of the adventures of Don Quixote. So, should I put SOTW away and just read this aloud or do we keep moving on in SOTW? My concern is that if I stop moving forward with SOTW every time I want to read a book, we'll never finish!

We do exactly the same. We have a book going as a read aloud at a separate time in the day. It won't always match up exactly with the chapter we are studying in SOTW, because we keep moving forward there. But it is in the general time period for the semester.

There are some smaller history/non fiction books and some fun picture books listed in SOTW A.G.s Those we read at the right time and often during history time or right before bed.

I also assign many of the historical fiction to my dds as their own silent reading. One of my dds in particular really loves the Dear America diary series and books like that. So I make sure and get all of those at the library and she reads those on her own time.

With sotw1, we read the chapter one day, usually a Monday, did the review questions and narration exercises orally, and read the associated Usborne pages.

The next day, Tuesday, she did the map work, coloring page, and we'd start the supplemental reading, some together, some independently. We would continue supplemental reading on Weds and Thurs and Fri if necessary.

Friday she'd do at least one project or activity. If she still had some independent reading left she might do it over the weekend or the next week, but then we would move on to the next chapter.

We do a chapter or two from SOTW each week. On one day we read the SOTW chapter, do our map/globe work, answer comprehension questions, discuss the topics and decide if we are going to complete any of the activities.

At the beginning of the week I stock up on appropriate corresponding reading material from the library. DD13 and ds10 choose 2-3 novels or other books to read independently. Dd7 and I read aloud from the library books. Dd13 also does outlining. Ds10 will begin outlining this year.

We usually have a read-aloud book that corresponds roughly with what we are studying. Sometimes it takes us longer to read the book than it does study the topic. Our oral reading time is separate from our history time. We also normally have an audio book that we listen to when we are in the car.
